JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT: The Assistive Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Specialist provides assessment, consultation, coaching, and professional learning services to support students with disabilities in accessing communication, instruction, learning environments, and educational opportunities. The specialist collaborates with students, families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams to identify, implement, and monitor effective AT and AAC supports that promote meaningful participation, communication, independence, and educational benefit.
The position also builds district capacity through professional learning, systems development, and promotion of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and inclusive educational practices.
- Provide comprehensive AT and AAC evaluations, device recommendation(s), implementation of comprehensive systems, and training to students, family and caregivers, and classroom teams.
- Conduc t formal and informal assessments, observations, trials, and data collection to determine student needs for assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication systems.
- Prepare and conduct professional development that uses the principles of adult learning related to AT/AAC devices and services; appropriate teaching strategies; and/or other accommodations and modifications.
- Participate in IEP meetings as a related service specialist and provide recommendations regarding AT/AAC needs, services, supports, accommodations, and communication-related goals. Monitor implementation fidelity and student progress to evaluate the effectiveness of recommended AT/AAC supports and make adjustments as needed.
- Collaborate closely with other service providers and educators to assess, select, and customize solutions tailored to individual student needs.
- Analyze student and program data to evaluate program effectiveness and provide information needed for strategic planning.
- Support continuity of AT/AAC services during transitions between classrooms, schools, programs, and post-secondary environments when appropriate.
- Collaborate with district leaders to develop and implement systems, procedures, and practices that support effective AT/AAC service delivery across the district.
- I dentify, design, construct, and/or provide purchasing information about appropriate AT and AAC devices.
- Provide coaching and guidance to program staff, parents and caregivers, and district partners to ensure successful adoption of effective integration and utilization of AT/AAC systems within the classroom environment, including collaboration with other departments within the district.
- Maintain a database, materials, and equipment. Make recommendations for the purchase of additional materials and equipment.
