About The Position

The Innovation team is a future‑thinking team responsible for world‑class innovation of platform technologies that enable next‑generation consumer products for active people.

The Innovation team is looking for an R&D Scientist/Engineer focused on conducting research and development of advanced materials and systems for integration into apparel, footwear, and equipment. As our R&D Scientist/Engineer, you will manage and coordinate day‑to‑day activities for R&D innovation projects, build relationships and manage information flow to other Columbia departments and outside partners to accomplish prioritized R&D projects.

How you’ll make a Difference
  • Research and development of advanced materials, including polymers, ceramics, metals and composites
  • Conduct and assist with laboratory testing related to new material and technology developments
  • Design tests, build, and repair test equipment as needed
  • Proactively manage and actively track prioritized project tasks and timelines
  • Literature review and research of relevant background science and technology; technology landscaping and due diligence research
  • Provide support to innovation management regarding research and development of new technologies
  • Partner with other technical team members to maintain proper documentation
  • International and domestic travel as needed to conduct material and technology development, including visits to manufacturing and R&D partners
You Are
  • A maker and a problem solver, especially when challenges arise while developing and commercializing new products
  • Able to build relationships and communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders
  • Hands‑on maker and tester, capable of displaying a clear understanding of materials and testing
  • An effective communicator, able to create and deliver technical and informational presentations
  • Strongly interested in products for use in the outdoors
You Have
  • Technical degree in Engineering Technology or related field, or BS in Science or Engineering; advanced degree (MS or PhD) a plus. Preferably in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, biomechanical engineering, or chemical engineering.
  • 3‑10 years’ experience in a science/engineering environment. Preferably focusing on R&D, innovation, prototype making or similar.
  • Training in heat transfer, structural mechanics, manufacturing technology, mechanical testing.
  • Proven experience showing ability to manage projects and deliverables.
  • Strong computer knowledge and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Matlab, Solidworks or similar.
  • Demonstrated skills in commercializing products in an innovation‑driven environment is a plus.
