Job Summary
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct fundamental and applied research in advanced manufacturing, focusing on aerospace light weighting, hypersonic systems, and naval shipbuilding. The role involves developing experimental methodologies, computational models, and laboratory investigations, and producing high-impact scientific publications and technical reports. The associate will also support additive manufacturing workforce development programs and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, collaborating closely with Professor Andrew Neils at the Roux Institute’s Portland and Brunswick campuses.
Minimum Qualifications- Ph.D. earned in mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrated expertise in the characterization and testing of crystalline materials, including metals and ceramics
- Strong background in additive manufacturing processes and the mechanics of materials
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Familiarity with data‑driven engineering methods, especially artificial intelligence or machine learning
- Design and execute experimental investigations into process–structure–property relationships for advanced engineering materials
- Develop curriculum and deliver hands‑on training for cold‑spray additive manufacturing, and instruct lab technicians as part of Department of Defense workforce development programs
- Operate cold‑spray additive manufacturing systems and contribute to powder‑bed fusion and directed energy deposition projects
- Collect process and property data; develop data architectures and tools for automating data analysis using MATLAB and Python
- Develop physics‑based computational models (e.g., finite element analysis) and use CAD tools such as ANSYS and Solid Works for geometric modeling of experimental specimens, metamaterials, and lattice structures
- Lead the preparation of sponsored program reports
- Lead or contribute to three or more peer‑reviewed publication submissions per year
- Mentor and train undergraduate and graduate students
- Support proposal development for the Roux Engineering team
- Perform laboratory management duties as needed
- Support external industry and academic collaborations

CompensationSalary range for this position is $60,315.00 – $85,192.50, depending on education, experience, location, and expertise.
