Embedded Systems Engineer Assistant

Location: Portland, OR

About Autolane

Autolane is on a mission to revolutionize last-mile logistics by empowering autonomous vehicle owners to unlock the value of their vehicle. Our flagship product is the industry's first orchestration layer for autonomous deliveries—coordinating heterogeneous autonomous systems (AVs, humanoid robots, delivery bots) to achieve zero-wait handoffs and maximum fleet utilization. We integrate directly with retailers, commercial real-estate operators, and AV fleets, building the AI infrastructure that enables autonomy at scale.

The Role

We're looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer Assistant who loves hands-on hardware work—Raspberry Pis, sensors, wiring, batteries, 3D printing, and real-world testing.

This role supports our Embedded Systems and Hardware R&D teams in building and deploying the next generation of Autolane edge devices. You’ll help assemble, test, diagnose, and iterate on sensor kits and embedded systems used in real curbside environments.

You’ll work closely with our CTO and Head of R&D, gaining exposure to embedded engineering at scale.

Core Responsibilities Hardware Assembly & Prototyping
  • Assemble Raspberry Pi–based sensor kits, mounting systems, and test rigs
  • Build and wire simple sensor circuits (ultrasonic, BLE modules, basic RF modules, etc.)
  • Assist with 3D printing: slicing models, maintaining printers, post-processing prints
  • Help fabricate and refine enclosures and fixtures for outdoor field use
  • Support battery pack assembly (LiPo/Li-ion) including wiring, connectors, and basic BMS integration
Embedded Linux & Raspberry Pi Support
  • Configure Raspberry Pi OS, networking, packages, and system services
  • Validate sensors and peripherals via Linux CLI (I2C tools, serial debugging, etc.)
  • Support imaging, flashing, and provisioning devices for deployment
  • Debug device bring-up issues (boot, power, interface faults)
Sensor & Device Testing
  • Assist in testing ultrasonic sensors, BLE scanners, simple RF modules, and GPS units
  • Run structured test plans to validate device performance
  • Log results, report issues, and support iteration cycles
  • Help operate oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers (training provided)
Field Deployment Support
  • Assist in field validation: powering units, verifying basic functionality, adjusting positioning
  • Capture on-site notes, photos, and performance observations
General R&D Support
  • Organize and maintain the hardware lab (tools, inventory, wire bins, batteries, Pi boards)
  • Support rapid prototyping efforts as requirements evolve
  • Help improve documentation for assembly and testing procedures
  • Work cross-functionally with embedded, mechanical, and operations teams
Required Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of hands-on experience with Raspberry Pi or other SBCs
  • Comfort working in Linux (CLI, networking basics, system services)
  • Experience with breadboards, soldering, crimping, and basic electronics assembly
  • Familiarity with I2C, SPI, UART, and reading simple sensor datasheets
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printers (Prusa, Bambu, etc.) — slicing, printing, troubleshooting
  • Experience assembling or working with LiPo/Li-ion battery packs safely
  • Ability to follow wiring diagrams and assemble harnesses/connectors
  • Strong mechanical instincts; comfortable with drills, screws, mounts, and prototyping tools
  • Excited to learn embedded development concepts even if not an expert yet
Preferred Qualifications

(Not required — nice to have)

  • Experience with ESP
32, Arduino, or other microcontroller boards
  • Basic Python scripting for device testing
  • Experience with enclosure design in Fusion
    360 or similar CAD tools
  • Familiarity with Git, Git Hub, or version-control basics
  • Basic understanding of power management and low-voltage systems
