The role:

We are recruiting for a regional environmental coordinator to join our Region 1:
Portland Metro Technical Center in Portland! In this role, you will ensure we accomplish our environmental objectives during the project development process and throughout all construction activities and maintenance procedures. You will also actively support a team of specialists who are responsible for conducting all environmental activities for transportation projects. Apply today!

A day in the life:
  • Coordinate environmental activities for our most complex projects with the Engineering & Technical Services Branch’s Environmental Section and represent our region in statewide environmental issues with a focus on compliance for Region 1’s local agency program.
  • Advise area and discipline managers, project managers and members of ODOT’s local agency program on environmental matters.
  • Actively participate on project development teams, including the completion of the NEPA process for federally funded projects: developing the project purpose and need, project alternatives and environmental avoidance and minimization measures.
  • Support local agency project managers with scope definition for the permitting and compliance portions of consultant contracts.
  • Monitor projects for change in scope and coordinate with the environmental specialists and assist with any contract and work‑flow modifications that result.
  • Coordinate with local, state and federal agencies to obtain, or support the procurement of environmental clearances for projects.
  • Write or provide oversight to the development of necessary Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) documentation to complete National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements for Categorical Exclusions.
  • Assist other NEPA staff with development of Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements, as well as the permitting portions for these larger projects.
  • Assist other ODOT staff with scoping the environmental portions of the Region’s project portfolio.
  • Write or provide oversight to the development of assessments that evaluate and propose resolutions for environmental impacts and constraints on projects and document in environmental prospectus (part
    3).
  • Monitor, review and maintain quality control/quality assurance of environmental prospectus, clearances and NEPA documents prepared by ODOT staff, local jurisdictions and consultants.
  • Provide environmental compliance support for construction and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in developing solutions consistent with our agency’s strategic direction. Work in an office environment with hybrid work options available and some travel required to attend meetings or field work.
