Description
MELE Associates is seeking a full-time employee to serve as CBRN technical equipment support for the Department of Homeland Security Mobile Detection Deployment Unit (MDDU) in Portland, OR. This position supports the United States Government’s capability to technically detect chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats nationwide. The MDDU Equipment Support maintains the readiness of CBRN detection equipment and conducts nation‑wide technical detection operations, training, and exercises to augment and train the capability of federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.
This position is contract award dependent.
- Track and maintain care, custody, and control of MDDU equipment, including detection equipment and radioactive sources.
- Conduct inventories of DHS MDDU property and update computerized tracking information as required.
- Ensure MDDU equipment is repaired, calibrated, and maintained in a ready state for deployment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year, including field‑level routine repairs in consultation with equipment manufacturers and subcontracting repair companies.
- Safely handle, use, transport, and ship radioactive sources following federal regulations and Department of Transportation requirements; perform work as a radiation worker.
- Conduct procurements of supplies and equipment following administrative procedures.
- Perform CBRN detection operations with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and stakeholders at special events, critical infrastructure sites, and other assignments.
- Perform “just‑in‑time” CBRN training with technical detection equipment for agencies and stakeholders.
- Assist in or conduct CBRN technical detection exercises with agencies and stakeholders.
- Continuously train, acquire, and maintain technical skills and share job knowledge with other MDDU team members.
- Maintain integrity, conduct, and professionalism at work and outside work hours.
- Maintain flexibility and adaptability to changing assignments, work schedules, and extended hours, including weekends and holidays; flex hours when possible.
- Work independently and as a team to meet all MDDU requirements.
- Follow guidance from the MDDU Site Lead Team Leader, Project Manager, client Program Manager, and designated MELE supervisor.
- Initiate, organize, and report on all planning and management taskings.
- Coordinate, initiate, and track the progress of deployments of the assigned MDDUs or equipment.
- Assist in preparing after‑action reports of MDDU missions.
- Provide oral and written status updates of tasks to the team lead, project manager, or client program manager as required.
- Travel 50%–75% of the month within the contiguous United States and U.S. territories; missions may include 10‑day deployments and back‑to‑back travel.
- Operate a truck and 5‑th wheel trailer safely.
- Follow MDDU guidance documents, federal travel regulations, and FAR.
- Maintain administrative proficiency in preparing accurate and timely travel and procurement expense reports.
- Experience in chemical, biological, radiological and/or nuclear CBRN detection with an emphasis on R/N detection.
- Five years of experience in radiation detection training and supporting detection operations at special events or steady‑state operations, including equipment demonstrations, training, and exercises at DHS SEAR or NSSE events. Biological and/or chemical detection experience is encouraged but not required.
- Knowledgeable in using representative R/N detection equipment such as: PRDs (e.g., D‑tect Systems Mini Rad‑D, Thermo Rad Eye, FLIR IdentiFINDER R300 nano Raider, Kromek D3S); human portable backpacks (e.g., Thermo Pack Eye, Bubble Technology Industries Flex Spec); RIIDs (e.g., FLIR IdentiFINDER R400, ORTEC Detective DX); mobile detection systems (e.g., Radiation Solutions Inc. RSI‑701).
- Knowledge of safely using and handling radioactive sources.
- Knowledge of using auxiliary equipment such as radios.
- Ability to perform minor maintenance/upkeep of equipment, including battery replacement and multi‑step troubleshooting with vendor interaction.
