Job Description

Atlas is hiring a Mechanical Systems Inspector to support construction of the Bull Run Filtration Facility in Gresham, Oregon—one of the Pacific Northwest’s most significant water infrastructure projects. This greenfield facility will provide a modern, resilient drinking water filtration system for the greater Portland region. The hire will have experience in water / wastewater infrastructure projects. Relocation assistance provided for qualified Inspector.

In this role, the Mechanical Inspector will perform inspections of mechanical systems such as process piping, pumps, valves, tanks, and treatment equipment to verify compliance with project documents, codes, and regulatory standards. Success in this position requires consistent onsite presence, attention to detail, and strong collaboration with contractors, engineers, materials technicians, and project leadership.

Core Responsibilities

Perform daily field inspections of mechanical systems including:

  • Process piping (ductile iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE)
  • Pump installations and alignment
  • Valves and appurtenances
  • Mechanical equipment foundations and anchorage
  • Treatment process equipment
  • Pipe supports and restraints
  • Verify installation activities comply with approved drawings, specifications, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Witness and document pressure testing, hydrostatic testing, pump testing, equipment startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate with material testing technicians to verify compliance of installed mechanical materials.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals to understand inspection criteria.
  • Identify and document non‑conformances and coordinate corrective actions with contractor and QC Supervisor.
  • Maintain detailed inspection reports, photo documentation, and daily logs.
  • Participate in preparatory meetings, pre‑installation meetings, and hold‑point inspections.
  • Monitor contractor quality control procedures and verify implementation.
  • Ensure installations comply with environmental, safety, and confined space requirements.
  • Support system turnover documentation and commissioning verification.
  • Communicate proactively with the Atlas Quality Control Supervisor regarding inspection findings, risks, or recurring issues.
You’ll thrive here if you have
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical field preferred; equivalent field experience considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical inspection or construction experience.
  • Experience inspecting mechanical systems on heavy civil, industrial, or water/wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and isometrics.
  • Experience witnessing and documenting pressure testing and equipment installation.
  • Strong understanding of installation tolerances, alignment procedures, and mechanical system performance requirements.
  • Experience with Welding inspection, and/or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification, preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with:
    • AWWA standards
    • ASTM standards
    • ASME piping requirements
    • Mechanical equipment installation standards
  • Experience with hydrostatic testing, bolt torque verification, pump alignment, and mechanical commissioning.
  • Proficiency with:
    • Procore or equivalent construction management software
    • Bluebeam
    • Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of state and local construction codes applicable to water treatment facilities.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
  • Strong observational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating within a large multi‑discipline team.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a high‑visibility public infrastructure project.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong organizational ability.
  • Comfortable working in an active construction environment.
  • Full‑time onsite presence required.
  • Ability to pass criminal background, MVR and drug screen upon offer.
  • Valid driver's license required.
