MCF (Mission Critical Facilities) Senior Project Engineer, Mechanical
The Senior Project Engineer will lead the technical design of data center projects, serving as subject matter expert, mentor, and resource to the technical team. The role delegates, leads, and directs work of Project Engineers and Designers, conceptualizing, executing, and ensuring quality throughout the design process to meet client needs and expectations.
Key Responsibilities- Assist the business development team in new project pursuits by providing input on RFPs/RFQs and participating in project interviews and presentations.
- Manage the technical project process and scope of work within the discipline; review and track scope, schedule, and budgeted hours; identify and resolve inconsistencies with the project manager.
- Delegate tasks to project engineers and designers within the discipline as appropriate.
- Follow the quality management process; conduct project reviews and approvals before all QA/QC reviews are completed by the technical authority.
- Build and maintain strong client relations; understand and articulate project and design requirements, progress, challenges, and troubleshooting to clients and technical staff.
- Lead technical discussions and mechanical work groups with project stakeholders as a trusted advisor, identify key requirements, and adapt design accordingly to meet project objectives.
- Coordinate with all disciplines to fully integrate work and client requests into design.
- Act as supervisor and resource to the technical design team; support and assist staff education, training, and development.
- Actively participate in the data center engineering/professional community to build personal knowledge, stay up-to-date with new and upcoming requirements and technologies, and strive for professional growth (e.g., attend meetings, seminars, conferences, and/or write articles for trade magazines).
- Identify opportunities to improve and standardize project deliverables (details, specifications, etc.) across Stantec MCF business centers.
- Contribute to development of design guides, technical memos, calculation templates, etc. as they pertain to data center design.
- Extensive experience in mission critical/data center design concepts.
- Experience working on large-scale projects with varied stakeholders.
- Comprehensive knowledge of engineering practices, concepts, principles, codes, and standards in the discipline and basic knowledge of practices and principles in other disciplines.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Able to conceptualize and develop solutions for multifaceted systems and interactions with varied disparate components.
- Strong communicator who effectively conveys scope, schedule, and budget to clients, co-workers, and technical teams (e.g., work plan, statement of work, and two-way communication).
- Adept at writing comprehensive reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
- Proficient in applicable software (Autodesk, BIM 360, Revit, Trace 700). Working knowledge or proficiency in hydraulic modeling software (e.g., Pipe‑FLO) and CFD software (e.g., Fluent, 6
Sigma) preferred. - Knowledge of the construction process and interaction with design.
- Equipped to analyze, problem solve, and train others; organized and attentive to detail; flexible and collaborative.
- Able to independently resolve complex problems within the engineer’s discipline.
- Accredited engineering degree or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum 10+ years related industry experience preferred.
- Mission critical / data center experience required.
- Registered professional engineer (PE) license or other professional certification based on expertise required.
