Job Title:
Distribution Engineer (PE)
Job Description
This role sits within the Distribution Department and focuses on the engineering, design, and review of overhead and underground electric distribution lines ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV. The Distribution Engineer develops detailed work packages for new customer construction, asset replacement, and system upgrades, ensuring all designs meet stringent quality, safety, and consistency standards. The position combines technical design work with project leadership, coordination of small design teams, and field support, including up to 30% travel to client sites.
Responsibilities
+ Design and review overhead and underground electric distribution lines from 4 kV to 69 kV, ensuring compliance with engineering and construction specifications.
+ Develop overhead, underground residential distribution (URD), reconductoring, and asset replacement projects, including detailed underground cable and conduit work packages.
+ Engineer and design complex overhead and underground distribution projects in both urban and rural environments, incorporating field engineering requirements, identification of conflicting utilities, and necessary engineering and design calculations.
+ Prepare comprehensive work packages for new customer construction projects, including design documents, calculations, and work permits in alignment with client standards.
+ Develop Point-to-Point (PtP) testing plans and lead both field and office personnel in executing field testing activities.
+ Coordinate small design teams to develop budgets, prepare scoping documents, establish design criteria, and deliver complete project packages.
+ Provide engineering assistance during construction, including participation in construction meetings, coordination with stakeholders, and support for community outreach as needed.
+ Review completed designs and design products to ensure they meet client quality, consistency, and technical standards.
+ Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities of team members, other departments, and external partners to complete substation-related projects.
+ Provide training, mentoring, and technical guidance to lower-level engineers and other team members.
+ Identify and initiate corrective actions when substation or distribution project objectives, schedules, or technical requirements are not being met.
+ Interpret applicable codes, regulations, and standards and translate them into practical design and construction requirements.
+ Promote engineering professionalism, best practices, and adherence to established standards across projects.
+ Develop, recommend, and implement engineering plans by establishing goals, objectives, schedules, resource needs, and information requirements for complex projects.
+ Travel up to 30% of the time to client sites, with trip durations varying based on project needs, to perform field assessments, support construction, and coordinate project activities.
Essential Skills
+ At least eight years of experience with electric utility distribution design projects.
+ At least eight years of experience in overhead, URD, reconductoring, asset replacement projects, and underground cable/conduit distribution design work package development.
+ At least eight years of experience delivering complex overhead and underground distribution projects in both urban and rural environments.
+ Professional Engineer (PE) license.
+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
+ Strong background in utility power distribution engineering and distribution design.
+ Experience working on utility distribution services or electrical engineering within commercial construction environments.
+ Proficiency in drafting and design using AutoCAD for overhead and underground distribution systems.
+ Hands-on experience with overhead distribution, underground utilities, underground distribution, and electric system design.
+ Ability to interpret and apply engineering codes, regulations, and client specifications to distribution and substation projects.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate engineering work, including small design teams and cross-functional…
