Position: Counsel, Product & Regulatory - Payments & AML

About Mercury

Since 2019, Mercury has been on a mission to reinvent banking for the modern age, offering checking and savings accounts, debit cards, payment services, credit products, cash management tools, and sophisticated analytics.

What You’ll Do
  • Advise on payments products and infrastructure, supporting a broad portfolio of payments‑related initiatives across Mercury. This includes matters involving payment rails, product launches, operational incidents, partner relationships, and customer‑facing experiences.
  • Partner across the company, building trusted relationships and bringing a legal perspective into conversations early in the product development cycle.
  • Help launch new payment capabilities, such as Zelle, from early exploration through launch, identifying risks and evaluating options.
  • Support financial crimes initiatives, working closely with AML, sanctions, compliance, and risk teams to interpret requirements and develop practical guidance.
  • Build scalable guidance and frameworks that improve consistency, reduce friction, and enable better decision‑making across the organization.
  • Use AI intentionally, applying legal AI tools and pursuing new ways to drive efficiency in legal workflows.
  • Stay curious and adaptable as the regulatory and product landscape continues to evolve.
What You Should Have
  • 4+ years of legal experience.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Experience supporting fintechs, banks, payment companies, sponsor‑bank programs, payment networks, BaaS providers, or regulators with substantial payments or AML exposure.
  • Strong working knowledge of payments‑related regulatory frameworks and an interest in emerging areas such as stable coins.
  • Familiarity with BSA/AML and sanctions requirements.
  • Exceptional communication skills, tailoring messages to diverse audiences.
  • Strong judgment and comfort operating in ambiguous environments.
  • A proactive sense of ownership, willing to say “I don’t know yet, but I’ll find out.”
  • Genuine curiosity about financial products, infrastructure, and the evolving regulatory landscape.
  • Knowledge of AI use cases within legal or financial services roles and an interest in leveraging AI to improve efficiency.
What Will Make You Successful Here

Success comes from viewing regulations as opportunities to design thoughtful, scalable solutions that benefit customers, rather than merely identifying risks. You’ll spend significant time on cross‑functional projects, pressure‑testing product designs, navigating operational questions, and building processes alongside compliance and operational partners. Impact is measured by improvements in product, process, or customer experience, not just technical correctness.

Why this role

This role offers a unique chance to join Mercury during a growth period, contributing to existing products and shaping new capabilities as Mercury builds a nationally chartered bank. You’ll work with experienced legal, compliance, product, and banking professionals and gain exposure to a wide range of regulatory and product questions.

The total rewards package includes base salary, equity (stock options), and benefits.
