Interim CFO​/Director of Finance

• CFS is partnering with a well-established Portland organization on an interim CFO / Director of Finance opportunity.
• This is a hands-on consulting engagement for an experienced finance leader who can step in, assess the current accounting function, and provide practical recommendations for improving structure, processes, and team effectiveness.
• The organization has a small, close-knit accounting team and a laid-back, collaborative Portland culture with a casual business environment.
• This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping leadership evaluate current accounting operations, simplify processes, and determine the right longer-term finance structure.
• The ideal consultant is calm, confident, collaborative, down-to-earth, and empowering, with the ability to coach an existing Controller while providing experienced financial leadership.
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 7:30/8:00 AM–3:30/4:00 PM
• Location: Portland, OR — onsite initially, with potential for a hybrid schedule
• Duration: Interim/temporary project

The Interim CFO / Director of Finance will partner closely with the COO and Controller to evaluate the accounting department’s current structure, responsibilities, and processes. This person will observe the existing operation, identify opportunities for greater efficiency, and provide recommendations around staffing, organization, and longer-term finance support.

• Assess the accounting department’s structure, responsibilities, workload allocation, and overall effectiveness.
• Review accounting, AP/AR, month-end close, approval, and financial review processes to identify inefficiencies or unnecessary complexity.
• Observe the month-end close process and evaluate whether current roles and responsibilities align with expected accounting standards and business needs.
• Identify redundant, over-engineered, or inefficient processes and recommend practical improvements.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and support to the Controller.
• Partner with the COO on target-setting, progress reviews, and recommendations for next steps.
• Evaluate longer-term staffing and organizational needs within the accounting and finance function.
• Provide experienced finance leadership and an objective perspective on the current operation.

• Previous experience serving as an Interim CFO, Controller, or senior finance leader within a mid-sized or larger organization.
• Strong knowledge of accounting and finance processes, including close, AP/AR, approvals, and financial review.
• Experience assessing accounting department structure, processes, and workload allocation.
• Ability to quickly understand an existing operation and provide practical, actionable recommendations.
• Strong coaching and communication skills, with the ability to support and empower an existing Controller.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Net Suite experience is a plus.
• CPA is a plus.
• Experience spanning accounting operations as well as financial analysis and forecasting is a plus.
• A calm, collaborative, confident approach and the ability to work effectively in a casual, down-to-earth environment.

$80 – $90/hour
