Plans Examiner
- Senior

Lane County is seeking an experienced Plans Examiner, Senior to perform advanced technical review of complex residential, commercial, and industrial construction plans. You will apply Oregon building codes and related standards to help ensure projects are safe, compliant, and positioned to move efficiently from design through construction.

This position offers meaningful flexibility for an experienced professional:

  • Hybrid work:
Most plan review and administrative work may be completed remotely, provided the employee resides and works in Oregon. Some in-office presence is required to coordinate paper plans, applications, and other operational needs.
  • Alternate schedule options:
    Flexible scheduling may be available.
  • Minimal field inspections:
Plans examiners generally focus on plan review. Inspections are uncommon and typically performed voluntarily or as needed, based on individual certifications. Required inspections occur only in rare circumstances.
  • No required overtime:
The position is designed to be completed within the established work schedule.

As a senior member of the team, you will review plans, specifications, engineering documents, and calculations for compliance with applicable codes and regulations. You will also serve as a trusted technical resource for architects, engineers, contractors, property owners, inspectors, and County staff—helping resolve complex code questions, clearly communicate needed corrections, and identify practical paths toward compliance.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical guidance and consultation on complex or unusual construction issues.
  • Supporting consistent, accurate, and timely plan-review practices.
  • Contributing to the development and improvement of procedures.
  • Sharing technical expertise and supporting the development of other team members.
  • Helping applicants navigate the permitting process with clarity, professionalism, and excellent service.

Lane County encompasses urban, rural, agricultural, coastal, and forested communities, creating a varied and technically interesting project portfolio. If you enjoy complex plan review, collaborative problem-solving, and the flexibility to perform most of your work remotely, we encourage you to apply.

The Land Management Division includes the following programs:
Land Use Planning, Building Safety, Administration, and Code Compliance. The Division provides essential services to the community, including issuing planning, building, and septic permits; reviewing building plans; inspecting structures for compliance with state and national code standards; and responding to code compliance concerns. Our work supports safe development, regulatory compliance, and responsive customer service for residents, businesses, and industry professionals.
