About the Project/Clinic:

AMI will be assisting in providing medical staff to the VA Portland Healthcare System in Portland, Oregon to help deliver compassionate and quality healthcare to patients in the area.

Job Summary:

AMI is seeking a skilled and dedicated Ultrasound Technologist to perform diagnostic ultrasound/imaging procedures and to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. As a member of the VA Portland Healthcare System’s Diagnostic Imaging team, the Ultrasound Technologist will provide high-quality, veteran-centered care in a fast-paced environment while practicing established safety standards.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform standard and complex ultrasound examinations, including but not limited to abdominal, liver, renal, gynecological (GYN), and small parts imaging.
  • Complete all computerized documentation and required forms associated with patient examinations, complications, and quality improvement activities.
  • Ensure quality assurance of ultrasound images, including proper positioning, labeling, technique, and network information prior to transmission to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
  • Schedule ultrasound examinations efficiently to optimize scanner utilization while maintaining flexibility to accommodate emergency and urgent cases; prioritize patients appropriately based on clinical need.
  • Consult with radiologists to determine requirements for non-standard examinations.
  • Communicate examination results as appropriate and notify radiologists immediately of scans requiring urgent or emergent attention.
  • Practice and promote radiation safety principles to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and self, including proper use of protective equipment, exposure factors, shielding, collimation, and adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements, including wearing film badges and participating in quality assurance and safety programs as directed.
  • Maintain accurate records and files of all examinations performed, including patient logbooks, exam registration and editing in computerized systems, image copying (CD or film), and patient tracking within the Hospital Information System / Radiology Information System (HIS-RIS), with transition to Cerner as applicable.
  • Verify and properly identify patient images, ensuring patient identification bands and examination requests match to prevent errors or misidentification.
  • Explain ultrasound procedures to competent patients, including what to expect and any potential risks or hazards, ensuring patient understanding and comfort.
  • Perform emergency ultrasound examinations during irregular hours, including participation in standby/on-call coverage on a 24-hour basis.
  • Work independently while reporting unusual problems, conflicts, or equipment issues to the Imaging Chief Technologist as appropriate.
