Position Overview /Duties

In this position, you will assist in the planning and managing of a comprehensive safety occupational health program to eliminate or control the risk of injury to personnel assigned to all phases of the safety and occupational health activities for Portland District’s Navigation Division.

Key Duties
  • Enforce safety and occupational health principles, methods, and techniques which includes understanding OSHA requirements.
  • Investigate mishaps involving personnel or damage to machinery, tools, materials, or equipment.
  • Address any near misses, injuries, or accidents and brief the Project Manager.
  • Evaluate, procure, and distribute accident prevention material and provide training.
  • Assist with the hearing conservation program, the respiratory protection program, fall protection program, and confined space program.
  • Communicate with the District Diving Coordinator to discuss policy and safe work practices for diving operations.
  • Perform administrative functions for the SOHO such as timekeeping, travel, correspondence, and electronic records management.
Other Conditions and Requirements
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A pre-employment occupational physical is required.
  • Temporary Duty Travel up to 10% of the time.

Minimum Education /Experience Requirements

In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience;

if qualifying based on education, your transcripts may be requested at a later date.

Specialized Experience

One year of specialized experience which includes applying federal safety standards applicable to industrial work processes, ensuring environmental compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations as well as performing site inspections and evaluating work practices to verify compliance and/or recommending changes.

OR

Education:

Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics,…
