MRI Technologist – VA Portland Health Care System
Location:Portland, OR
Schedule:Variable 8‑, 9‑, or 10‑hour shifts
The MRI Technologist provides high‑quality diagnostic imaging services to support Veteran care within the VA Portland Health Care System. This role performs a full range of MRI procedures, ensures patient safety, and collaborates closely with radiologists, nurses, and other clinical staff in a fast‑paced, patient‑centered environment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine and advanced MRI examinations in accordance with VA protocols and safety standards.
- Operate MRI scanners, coils, and related imaging equipment with proficiency and attention to detail.
- Screen patients for MRI safety, contraindications, and exam readiness.
- Position patients accurately to obtain optimal imaging results while ensuring comfort and safety.
- Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Collaborate with radiologists to ensure high‑quality imaging and timely exam completion.
- Monitor equipment performance and report issues promptly.
- Follow all VA, FDA, and MRI safety guidelines, including Zone protocols and emergency procedures.
- Support workflow efficiency, patient throughput, and departmental coverage needs.
Personnel may be assigned to any eight (8), nine (9), or ten (10) hour shift based on departmental needs:

- Rotating weekends and holiday shifts
- Variable hours depending on service needs
- Overtime

Call‑Back duty as needed, including emergent situations
- ARRT (MR) certification required or ARRT (R) with MRI experience and willingness to obtain MR certification per VA standards.
- Current BLS certification.
- Minimum 1–2 years of MRI experience preferred; VA or federal healthcare experience a plus.
- Strong knowledge of MRI physics, safety protocols, and cross‑sectional anatomy.
- Proficiency with EMR systems (EPIC experience preferred).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication, patient‑care, and critical‑thinking skills.
- Ability to lift, move, and position patients and equipment.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and occasional pushing/pulling of imaging equipment
