Lead Brewer Position Summary
The Lead Brewer is responsible for the entire beer‑making process, including raw material handling, brew day operations, inventory, fermentation monitoring, cellaring, packaging, and ensuring all quality standards are met throughout every process. The Lead Brewer will be permanently assigned to either the Mississippi St. or Glendoveer brewery and will work primarily as the point person at the assigned facility, leading day‑to‑day operations.
The Lead Brewer should be ultra‑passionate about craft brewing, self‑motivated to further their knowledge, problem‑solve, and bring a fun and inspiring attitude to the team!
- Experience
- Minimum of three years of brewing industry experience required.
- Experience and passion for a wide variety of beer styles is required.
- Candidates must be highly motivated, self‑directed, and results‑driven, with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Possess a commitment to quality, innovation, and continuous improvement, never accepting “That’s the way it’s always been” as an answer.
- The ability to troubleshoot and work independently is a requirement.
- Certification or degree in brewing science or a brewing‑related field and/or degree/coursework from a recognized brewing school is a plus, but not required.
- Strong technical knowledge of all aspects of the brewing process is required.
- Strong mechanical understanding of the brewing process and equipment is required.
- Strong working knowledge and experience with commonly used brewery chemicals.
- Must possess solid skills with basic mathematical computations and have basic computer functions knowledge, including MS Office and Google Drive. Inventory management software experience is a plus.
- Forklift certified or willingness to become certified is required.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends during peak business times.
- This position requires a valid driver's license to travel between locations, a satisfactory background check, and the ability to meet the physical demands of the position detailed below.
- Brewhouse and Cellar:
Follow established Von Ebert SOPs in all brewery operations, including but not limited to wort production, brewhouse CIP, raw material and spent grain handling, FV and BBT CIP, dry‑hopping, fining, transfers, tank purges, and packaging. - Create and ensure accuracy of upcoming brew sheets from standard templates.
- Work with Director of Brewing Operations and Director of Sensory and Innovation on new recipe and process developments.
- Create, maintain, and adjust SOPs.
- Distribution:
Assist Director of Brewing Operations and Logistics Lead in communicating availability with distributors and moving finished beer between facilities. - Ensure finished goods are prepped and ready for distribution on pickup day.
- Logistics and Software Management:
Process raw material usage in EKOS Brewery Management software program from brew day to finished goods, including but not limited to batch turns, finings, dry hopping, transfers, and packaging. - Communicate with Director of Brewing Operations and Logistics Lead to ensure raw materials are ordered and delivered in a timely manner.
- Assist Director of Brewing Operations with staffing and scheduling needs.
- Assist Director of Brewing Operations and Logistics Lead with monthly inventory and rectifying.
- Ensure correct inventory levels are maintained for all raw materials and finished products.
- Facilities Maintenance:
Maintain brewery building and equipment using proper operating, preventive maintenance, and cleaning/sanitation procedures. - Proactively maintain and manage all repair and maintenance issues, ensuring the brewery is kept in “like new” condition.
- Create, maintain, and adjust maintenance SOPs and schedule.
- Safety and Compliance:
Maintain SDS binder and ensure it is up to date. - Understand and apply principles and requirements of FSMA, HACCP, and GMPs in operating a food manufacturing facility.
