Department Overview

14C Medicine is a 31‑bed acute care medicine unit serving patients ages 18‑100+ with a variety of medical and acute care diagnoses, including cardiac conditions such as atrial arrhythmias and NSTEMI cases. Clinical interventions include intravenous fluids, tube feedings, pain management, respiratory care (tracheostomy and stable ventilators), cystic fibrosis support, antibiotic administration, diabetes management, heart failure care, endocarditis therapy, detox, behavioral and/or crisis management.

14C proudly welcomes psychiatric patients with medical issues that cannot be managed on the inpatient psychiatric unit (1NW). This includes patients on court holds, suicidal ideation, and other psychiatric diagnoses with an overlapping medical condition. A Psychiatric Professional Practice Leader is available for consultation to support medication management and monitoring.

Function/Duties of Position
  • Strategic & Unit Planning – Partner with the Nurse Manager to translate organizational and nursing priorities into unit plans; contribute to goal setting (short‑ and long‑term), measurable targets, and implementation timelines; coordinate interventions, track progress using data, communicate status to stakeholders, and support readiness for accreditation/regulatory changes.
  • Operational Leadership – Oversee day‑to‑day operations, including staffing, scheduling, assignments, patient flow, and escalation pathways to ensure safe, effective care; lead huddles, facilitate clear communication, and provide coverage across all shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends) as needed.
  • Staff Supervision & Development – Provide coaching, mentoring, competency validation, and performance feedback; participate in orientation and evaluations; support recruitment, retention, and succession planning; recognize exemplary practice and address performance concerns.
  • Quality, Safety & Risk – Promote adherence to professional standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements; use data to monitor outcomes; lead participation in performance improvement, event review, risk mitigation, and dissemination of best practices; support standard work and error‑reduction processes.
  • Human Resources & Employee Relations – Foster engagement and a positive work environment; facilitate conflict resolution; support attendance management and progressive performance management; ensure compliance with labor/collective bargaining agreements and HR policies.
  • Resource & Financial Stewardship – Assist with productivity and resource monitoring; apply staffing tools and guidelines; monitor overtime/premium use and supply utilization; educate staff on financial implications of care decisions and support cost‑effective operations.
  • Professional Practice & Collaboration – Model ethical, professional nursing practice consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics and Nurse Practice Act; advocate for patients and families; collaborate with interprofessional teams and shared‑governance structures; promote a culture of safety, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Two (2) years of relevant clinical nursing experience in a related specialty, including demonstrated leadership responsibilities (e.g., Charge Nurse, Preceptor, Supervisor, or equivalent).
  • Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license (or ability to obtain prior to hire).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Additional clinical certifications (e.g., ACLS, NRP) may be required by assignment.
  • Leadership/specialty certification (e.g., NE‑BC, CNML, or clinical specialty) within two (2) years of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in nursing or a related field.
  • Previous management experience.
  • Nurse executive certification.
