Department Overview

The Adult Ambulatory Neurology Department provides comprehensive outpatient neurological care through a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nervous system, and neuromuscular system. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care that promotes optimal neurological health, enhances quality of life, and supports patients and families throughout their care journey.

The Department of Neurology and its affiliated practices comprise a multi-location, interdisciplinary program that integrates clinical care, research, education, and innovation. Specialty programs include Comprehensive Neurology, the Layton Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Center, ALS and Neuromuscular Disorders, Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Headache Center, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Program, and the Oregon Stroke Center. Through collaboration across specialties and care settings, we provide coordinated, evidence-based care while advancing neurological science through research and training the next generation of neurologists and healthcare professionals.

Function/Duties

of Position

Adult Ambulatory Neurology Resource RN The Adult Ambulatory Neurology Resource RN provides comprehensive nursing care, clinical support, and care coordination for patients with complex neurological conditions across all Adult Ambulatory Neurology programs. The Resource RN serves as a flexible clinical resource, supporting multiple neurology subspecialties including General Neurology, Neuromuscular Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Headache, Movement Disorders, Stroke, Sleep Medicine, Cognitive and Memory Disorders, and other specialty clinics as needed.

The RN partners with patients, families, clinicians, and interdisciplinary team members to facilitate care coordination, support disease management, and ensure continuity of care across the outpatient neurology setting.

  • Provides clinical nursing support across all Adult Ambulatory Neurology subspecialty programs based on patient and operational needs.
  • Serves as a department-wide resource by providing coverage for staffing gaps, leaves, fluctuating patient volumes, and workflow demands.
  • Performs clinical assessment, triage, and response to patient concerns received through Epic In Basket, MyChart, telephone calls, and other communication channels.
  • Utilizes clinical judgment to prioritize patient needs, identify urgent concerns, and facilitate timely intervention.
  • Collaborates with clinicians and interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement, and coordinate individualized care plans.
  • Coordinates diagnostic testing, referrals, follow-up care, and treatment plans across multiple specialties and care settings.
  • Facilitates access to specialty therapies and treatments by partnering with infusion centers, specialty pharmacies, insurance payors, and external healthcare organizations.
  • Supports medication access, prior authorization appeals, and other processes that reduce barriers to care.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, symptom management, and available resources.
  • Identifies, escalates, and assists in the management of complex clinical situations to support safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Supports onboarding, workflow standardization, and knowledge sharing across Adult Ambulatory Neurology nursing teams.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and departmental initiatives to improve patient outcomes, access, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Documents clinical assessments, interventions, patient communications, and care coordination activities according to departmental and organizational standards.
  • Utilizes Epic, Spok Mobile and other approved communication platforms to support patient care and team collaboration.
  • Adapts to varying clinic workflows, subspecialty requirements, and operational priorities while maintaining quality, safety, and service standards.
