Position: Recreation Employment – Inclusive Recreation (Ages 18+) - Open Continuous

Summary

Inclusion services serve people who are disabled or require accommodations to participate in activities across Portland Parks locations. This can include hidden disabilities such as ADHD, autism, anxiety/depression, etc., or visible disabilities such as wheelchair, walkers, crutches, etc.

Program Schedules
  • Pre‑School – 6 hours a day, Monday‑Friday, with 3–5 year‑olds
  • SUN Schools/After school Programs – 2.5‑3.5 hours, afternoons 3‑6 pm, Monday‑Friday, with youth
  • Classes – occasional sessions, up to 5 weeks, with all ages
  • Events/Trips – single‑day activities, often with adults
  • Day Camps – Winter or Spring Break (8 hours a day) or Summer (6‑8 hours, Monday‑Friday), with youth
Responsibilities
  • Directly support one or two individuals to assist participants of all ages with physical, developmental, and/or emotional disabilities as they integrate into general recreation programs.
  • Adapt activities, maintain a safe environment, and promote participants’ success.
  • Communicate clearly with families/caregivers, Community Center staff, and the Inclusion Services coordinator.
  • Travel and work at various Portland Parks locations.
Essential Physical Functions
  • Lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Push and maneuver a participant in a wheelchair safely.
  • Walk or hike outdoors, on uneven or sloped surfaces.
  • Respond quickly to a child’s actions.
Job Details

Job Type: Casual, Part‑time. Classified by the City of Portland as Parks Activities Specialist.

Schedule:

Flexible hours; may include day, evenings, weekends, or holidays. Hours per week may vary.

Location:

Multiple areas around Portland; applicants may choose any areas.

Pay Range:
Base pay $19.04–$22.21 (entry $19.04). Premium pay $21.04–$22.04 (entry $21.04 or $22.04 based on experience). Training pay $19.04 for all positions.

Language Pay:
Extra pay may be provided for speaking a language besides English in service of the community.

  • Positive and supportive attitude toward individuals with disabilities.

  • Ability to spot and handle safety and emergency situations.
  • Teamwork and positive relationship building with staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Knowledge of behavior modification techniques and use of positive reinforcement.
