This position is responsible for testing, sampling, and inspecting construction materials or elements in a laboratory or field setting to comply with the supplier and/or owner specifications as well as analyzing and communicating test results to operations personnel to verify quality control standards are satisfied. This position will also solve technical issues, develop other engineers and technicians, and manage assigned Quality projects to ensure alignment with Graniterock’s Strategic business objectives.
EssentialJob Accountabilities
- Comply, understand, and promote corporate and division safety initiatives to ensure “Safety Before All Else.”
- Perform quality control testing and placement inspection of: soil, aggregate, hot mix asphalt (HMA), Portland cement concrete (PCC), and material used in pavement recycling and soil stabilization (CIR/FDR) in either a laboratory or field setting to ensure compliance with the supplier and/or owner specifications, while improving products.
- Perform cost effective mix designs on hot mix asphalt (HMA) and Portland cement concrete (PCC) to meet project specifications.
- Communicate testing and inspection results to supervisors and/or operations personnel and help formulate solutions to ensure quality control standards are satisfied and process changes can be implemented.
- Mentor and train other personnel in quality testing daily tasks.
- Manage various quality testing special projects as assigned by supervisor.
- Prepare, calculate, and analyze results of laboratory testing utilizing math and problem-solving skills to ensure compliance with the supplier and/or owner specifications.
- Perform testing proficiently on two or more of the above materials in either a lab or field setting. Work independently and train other personnel in two or more materials.
- Develop potential improvements to plants, paving processes, pavement recycling and soil stabilization (CIR/FDR) processes and/or materials in order to reduce cost and increase quality.
- Drive organizational improvements and promote ownership within the lab to create efficiencies, decrease test variability and increase test accuracy.
- Participate in and promote safety procedures and policies, including complying with OSHA and/or MSHA rules and regulations, to promote a safe working environment.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Regional or State Agency certification for materials being sampled, tested, and inspected required.
- 3+ years of experience in construction materials field and/or lab testing.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work under little or no supervision while performing required testing and other daily tasks.
- Must be a self-starter and manage their day-to-day tasks.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office products.
- Basic math skills required.
- Demonstrated exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Must be able to work various shifts, including overnight, as required by business needs.
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs. safely from floor to hip height repeatedly.

Salary will be determined based on the individual’s knowledge, skills and experience. Ranges are aligned with market data and/or collective bargaining agreement rates.
