The Food Innovation Center at Oregon State University seeks a Laboratory Technician 1 to provide technical support for laboratory research and applied food product development, with emphasis on supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) processing operations and associated laboratory tasks. Under close supervision, the incumbent will support standardized procedures, sample preparation, equipment operation, data recording, and basic laboratory maintenance to enable high-quality, reproducible experimental work.
This role supports bench-to-market food innovation across interdisciplinary applied projects.
Position Duties* Laboratory Procedures & Support (50%)
- Perform routine laboratory tasks following well-defined, written procedures, including standardized preparatory and experimental tasks.
- Prepare reagents, media, and solutions; handle and label samples accurately.
- Assist with experimental activities under supervision, including scCO₂ system operations.
- Operate common laboratory equipment, including pressure systems, analytical instruments, and related apparatus.
- Adjust, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance; recognize and report malfunctions.
- Log samples, record test data, maintain lab records, and prepare basic reports.
- Maintain documentation of routine procedures and experimental observations.
- Maintain a neat, orderly, and hazard‑free laboratory environment.
- Restock supplies, handle aseptic techniques, and support compliance with safety protocols.
- One year of experience in a laboratory setting and high school courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course that included laboratory work; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow written procedures and standard operating protocols.
- Familiarity with supercritical CO₂ processing equipment or high‑pressure systems.
- Exposure to food processing, pilot‑scale equipment, or ingredient characterization.
- Experience with basic data organization, spreadsheets, or laboratory record systems.
- Interest in applied food research and product development.
- Position requires working in a laboratory environment with chemical and pressurized systems.
- Monthly travels are expected to the campus for running experiments.
- Must adhere to all safety and environmental protocols.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform standard laboratory duties.
