Job Description & How to Apply Below

This is a business development role. You build a book of commercial insurance clients in the Portland metro — identifying prospects, running the sales process, and staying on those relationships as the long-term point of contact.

Brown & Brown is one of the largest insurance brokerages in the country. Our Portland office operates with local decision-making and local client relationships, backed by national carrier access and specialty resources most independent agencies can't match.

What the work looks like
  • Prospecting and pipeline development across the Portland market, in industry segments you help define
  • Consultative discovery — understanding a business's operations, exposures, and risk tolerance well enough to recommend a program
  • Coordinating with underwriters and internal marketing resources to build and place proposals
  • Presenting to owners, CFOs, and risk managers
  • Retaining and growing the accounts you write, with a dedicated service team supporting day-to-day client needs
  • Working toward a production target that grows over your first several years
  • Roughly 50-60% of your time out of the office with customers and prospects
Who we're looking for

If you're already in insurance:
Experience as a producer, account executive, or a service professional ready to move to the revenue side. Property & Casualty license current or recently held. Familiarity with commercial lines and a sense of what segment you want to build in.

If you're coming from another industry: A track record of consultative or solution selling in a role with a real quota — B2B services, medical or industrial sales, financial services, logistics, technology, staffing, or similar. You're comfortable with a long sales cycle, multiple stakeholders, and prospecting that doesn't hand you leads. No insurance background required, and we'll support your P&C licensing.

For both tracks: self-direction is the real requirement. Nobody fills your calendar for you.

Compensation

This role pays a base salary plus commission on the business you produce. Base is set based on your experience and the book you're expected to build.

How the commission side works:

  • You earn a percentage of first-year commissions on new accounts you write, and a lower percentage on those accounts every year they renew. A book built in year two is still paying in year six.
  • Commissions are paid monthly.
  • Referral and cross-sell arrangements apply to business you originate but don't service directly.
  • If a policy generates return premium, the related commission is adjusted accordingly.

New producers are supported through the ramp period while the book builds. You are not expected to be self-funding from month one.

We go beyond standard benefits, focusing on the total well-being of our teammates, including:

  • Health Benefits:

Medical/Rx, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Disability Insurance
  • Financial Benefits:

    ESPP; 401k;
    Student Loan Assistance;
    Tuition Reimbursement
  • Mental Health & Wellness:
Free Mental Health & Enhanced Advocacy Services
  • Beyond Benefits:
Paid Time Off, Holidays, Preferred Partner Discounts and more.

Not reflective of all benefits. Enrollment waiting periods or eligibility criteria may apply to certain benefits. Benefit details and offerings may vary for subsidiary entities or in specific geographic locations.

A note on timing

We're actively building relationships with sales talent in the Portland market. Producer openings come up throughout the year, and we'd rather know you before one does than start from scratch when it opens. If your background fits, we'll set up a conversation — even if the timing on either side isn't immediate.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field preferred; other combinations of work and education considered
  • Property & Casualty license required, or willingness to obtain one with our support
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record and maintenance of minimum insurance coverages
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; AMS
    360 experience a plus
