Summary Position is located within Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the VA Portland Healthcare System (VAPORHCS). Incumbent will perform duties of a general mechanic throughout areas of the healthcare system for which EMS has responsibility to include work on general equipment - high-tech equipment - and custodial equipment. This position will be required to travel to all VA Portland Health Care System sites in support of EMS Equipment Program.

Experience:
A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Screen-out element:
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Ability to do the work of an Electrical Equipment Worker without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties.
Qualifying experience includes: ability to work with pneumatic and hydraulic equipment. Possess basic knowledge of carpentry - electrical - and mechanical maintenance and related fields. Ability to understand ultraviolet light disinfection technology and its inherent dangers as well as the ability to perform maintenance on highly technical state-of-the-art equipment. Possess the ability to read, write and comprehend written instructions and compile reports - proficient computer skills due to the extensive number of pieces of equipment that contain computerized controls - databases - and programming.
Knowledge of electricity - small engine repair/maintenance and use of basic maintenance tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. Knowledge and skill to repair and adjust control such as pressure and vacuum regulation control - time delay relays - gauges - and temperature controls. Ability to repair and adjust pressure, vacuum and temperature gauges - switches and solenoids.
Selective Placement Factoring:
Selective placement factors are applied in the same manner as minimum qualification requirements. Failure to meet a selective placement factor will result in you not receiving further consideration. In addition to the minimum qualifications described above - you must meet the following selective placement factor:
Must have a Valid State Driver's License.
Physical Requirements:
Walking, pushing carts, stooping, bending, lifting heavy loads and small pieces of furniture for sustained periods is required by the incumbent. He/she works at work sites - on ladders - overhead - and in cramped or awkward positions. Routinely will be required to lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds - unassisted. Uses manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions.
The employee will be required to lift and move heavy objects - including machinery and equipment - and to work in practically all positions - under - over - and inside equipment and periodically work on ladders. Equipment inventory listing surveys require extensive walking - traveling through all parts of the main campuses and outpatient clinics - approximately 1.7 million square feet of space and recording equipment locations.
Working Conditions:
Incumbent will routinely work inside and outside while traveling between buildings and repairing/installing exterior items in all kinds of weather.
