Position Summary
Utility Workers II – CL perform a variety of jobs in construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of City equipment and infrastructure. They drive trucks requiring a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License within 9 months of hire and perform semi‑skilled work across multiple functions. Responsibilities include traffic control flagging, graffiti abatement, digging, grading, raking, operating compressors and air tools, power tools, and miscellaneous hand and power tools.
They also perform minor maintenance and repair on tools and equipment, work closely with journey persons such as carpenters, concrete finishers, and equipment operators, and take direction from crew leaders and supervisors.
- Experience doing physical or hands‑on work such as maintenance, construction, landscaping, cleaning, warehouse work, retail, food service, or similar jobs.
- Ability to safely learn and use hand tools, power tools, equipment, and materials while following safety rules and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic safety practices, traffic control in work zones, emergency response procedures, and common tools and equipment used in maintenance and construction work.
- Ability to identify problems, think through solutions, make decisions, and work independently when needed.
- Experience following written and verbal instructions, communicating clearly with coworkers and the public, and working well as part of a team.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, in confined spaces, heights, ditches, and tight spaces, and to work long shifts during emergency situations.
- Preferred:
Class A Commercial Driver’s License. - Must possess a valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
- Must obtain a Class A CDL within 9 months of hire.
- Must submit a complete five‑year court‑certified Driver’s Abstract upon offer.
- Must pass a pre‑placement medical exam upon offer.
Starting wage: $32.67 hourly; $33.88 hourly after six months; $35.12 hourly after one year of employment. This position is represented by LiUNA Laborers Local 483. Benefits information is available in the City’s benefits tab.
