The RoleFiber Splicer – Portland, OR
Fiber Tel is looking for a skilled Fiber Splicer who will oversee up to one employee, provide on‑the‑job training to the Splicing Laborer, and frequently communicate with customers. The position requires flexibility in hours, including occasional on‑call duty, nights, and weekends.
Pay: $25–$40 per hour, DOE.
Responsibilities- Install and repair fiber optics.
- Assist in splicing and perform spur and center splice operations.
- Set up safety perimeter using signage, cones and barriers.
- Flag traffic when required.
- Prepare splice locations, termination points, and install splice closures.
- Clean, maintain, stock, and secure assigned vehicle and equipment daily.
- Splice loose tube fiber and operate a bucket truck.
- Operate splicing equipment, including OTDR testing and troubleshooting.
- Construct proper splice cases and perform mid‑sheath splices.
- Complete cut sheets, audit sheets, and update job completion sheets.
- Submit daily time cards for crew members.
- Pull fiber when needed.
- Perform pre‑trip vehicle inspections daily.
- Work at night or during other flexible hours as required.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
- Possess a valid driver’s license; ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License is a plus.
- Good driving record.
- Basic knowledge of and ability to operate utility trucks and hand tools safely.
- Effective communication with customers and crew.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and lift/carry up to 50 lbs regularly, up to 100 lbs with or without assistance.
- Knowledge of fiber optic color codes and terminology.
- 2–3 years of experience splicing fiber, including all necessary steps.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, nights, and weekends.
- Previous fiber experience, preferably in telecommunications.
- Ability to perform all duties in fiber optic construction.
- Willingness to travel.
This is a full‑time, hourly position. The job requires outdoor work in varied weather conditions—extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, and high wind. Work may involve exposure to natural gas, electrical shock hazards, and moderate to loud noise levels. The environment may include changing terrain, traffic, urban and rural settings.
Physical RequirementsThe employee must stand for long periods (up to 12 hours), tolerate extreme weather, and perform lifting, standing, climbing, kneeling, reaching, and crawling. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
