Job Summary
Vigor Marine Group, an integrated partner with a national footprint in marine maintenance, modernization, marine fabrication, and marine services, is seeking a skilled sheet metal worker for its shipyard locations. The hourly rate for this position is $40.18.
Essential Functions & Major Responsibilities- Complies with shipyard safety and environmental measures.
- Removes, rebuilds, and reinstalls duct work, sheeting, lockers, and furniture from vessels or shipyard sites using welding and fitting techniques.
- Fabricates basic sheet‑metal projects to customer specifications.
- Visualizes completed job from start to finish and uses blueprints to accomplish projects.
- Performs basic layout, including center square, round elbows, and funnels.
- Fabrics duct work on and off the ship.
- Removes and installs duct work.
- Performs basic welding (stick and MIG).
- Recognizes materials (e.g., stainless steel, aluminum) and determines gauge.
- Works at heights up to 100 feet, including confined spaces and overhead positions.
- Uses a tape measure, ladder, and other hand and power tools safely.
- Attends to assembly work associated with the sheet‑metal trade.
- Installs duct work, galley equipment, ceiling panels, and similar items throughout the yard as needed.
Skills and Abilities
- Communicates effectively and works independently or in a group.
- Performs basic math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication).
- Reads, writes, speaks, and comprehends English.
- Utilizes basic geometry and trigonometry.
- Operates shop equipment such as presses, shears, hand brakes, roll machines, drill presses, and spot welders.
- High School diploma or GED preferred.
- Four years of relevant work experience, preferably in a shipyard.
- Proof of skills, work history, or education may substitute for experience.
- Four‑hour fire watch certification.
- HAZWOPER – First Responder Awareness Level.
- Confined space certification.
- Sitting up to 8 hours per day while welding; standing up to 8 hours while operating machinery; walking up to 3,000 feet per day.
- Crouching, kneeling, stooping, and twisting for up to 15 minutes at a time, and climbing ladders up to 100 feet.
- Reaching overhead for up to 6 hours daily; lifting up to 100 pounds, typically 75 pounds individually; carrying up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Operating metal cutting and welding tools continuously with intermittent use of scissors for trimming; participating in heavy lifting.
- Vision required for precise measurement; near and far acuity, depth perception, and field of vision are necessary.
- Hearing and talking with coworkers for coordination and safety.
- Regular communication with coworkers for safety coordination.
- Works independently or with a crew on shop and ship tasks.
- May supervise others based on project needs.
- Indoor and outdoor environments, exposing workers to noise, heat, cold, dust, and fumes.
- Safety gear required: hard hat, welding helmet, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
- Uses equipment such as shears, hand brakes, welding tools, grinders, and drills.
