Aircraft Pneumatic Systems Mechanic

Duties As an Aircraft Pneumatic Systems Mechanic, this position is located in a National Guard aircraft maintenance organization. Its primary purpose is to perform on- and/or off-equipment maintenance on assigned aircraft pneumatic systems, components, and related aerospace ground equipment.

The duties include:

  • Performing maintenance and operational and functional checks on assigned pneumatic systems.
  • Troubleshooting, removing, inspecting, installing, repairing, modifying, rebuilding, and/or testing pneumatic systems and components.
  • Accomplishing periodic and special inspections on hydraulic components.
  • Operating portable test stands for checkout of pneumatic systems.
  • Removing, installing, and/or repairing pneumatic components from aircraft and associated aerospace ground equipment.
  • Operating test equipment for all hydraulic components.
  • Inspecting for cracks, scratches, nicks, and holes on seals, gaskets, packings, and hoses.
  • Modifying systems and their components.
  • Rigging, adjusting, and aligning hydraulic components to ensure maximum operating efficiency.
  • Polishing cylinders and pistons to ensure proper fit.
  • Investigating pneumatic failures to determine causes and accomplish corrective maintenance.
  • Performing installation, modification, and/or repair of aircraft pneumatic systems.
  • Determining proper maintenance and repair procedures and minimum requirements pertaining to parts, clearance and tolerances, and performance characteristics of pneumatic systems and related aerospace ground equipment.
  • Solving unusual maintenance problems by studying layout drawings, schematic diagrams, applicable technical publications, and analyzing construction and operating characteristics of pneumatic systems.
  • Diagnosing recurring malfunctions and recommending corrective action by initiation of Quality Deficiency Reports, proposed modifications, or other appropriate actions.
  • Performing Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs) related to pneumatic systems.
  • Accomplishing local manufacture of hose assemblies and providing testing of aircraft tubing.
  • Accomplishing hydraulic fluid sampling on assigned aircraft, test stands, and servicing equipment.
  • Repairing in-flight refueling systems on tanker aircraft.
  • Performing organizational and field level maintenance to include periodic, phase time, calendar, unscheduled, and special inspection.
  • Providing technical assistance to other shops concerning complicated interaction malfunctions between other systems, subsystems, and components.
  • Jacking aircraft to simulate flight configuration, connecting power sources, and using cockpit controls, gauges, and additional precision instruments to check the operation of such items as landing gear doors, ground and flight spoilers and steering and brake systems for performance and conformance to operating specifications.
  • Preparing for and participating in various types of readiness evaluations such as ORI, IG and UE inspections, mobility, and command support exercises.
  • May be required to perform such additional duties as structural fire fighting, aircraft fire/crash/rescue duty, serve as security guard, remove snow, load and handle munitions, launch/recover and service of aircraft, operate heavy equipment, maintain facilities and equipment, or serves as a member of a team to cope with natural disasters or civil emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • National Guard Membership is required.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

  • Must be able to obtain/maintain the necessary security clearance for the position.
  • Military Assignment Requirement:
    Open to Enlisted members only
  • Military Rank/Grade Requirement:
    Minimum Rank AB/E-1 to Maximum Rank SSgt/E5
  • Compatible Military AFSC Requirement: 2A6 X5
