Description Shop Manager

River City Environmental, Inc. (RCE) is looking for an experienced and motivated Shop Manager to oversee our in-house mechanic shop and keep our fleet, equipment, and vehicles operating safely and efficiently. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for managing daily shop operations, coordinating maintenance and repairs, supervising shop personnel, and ensuring work is completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.

The ideal candidate is an experienced mechanic or shop leader who understands fleet maintenance, can diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues, and has the leadership skills to organize people, prioritize repairs, and hold a team accountable. This person should be comfortable getting their hands dirty when needed while also managing the bigger picture of shop operations.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Manage the day-to-day operations of the company’s in-house mechanic shop.

Supervise, lead, and support mechanics and other shop personnel.

Schedule and prioritize preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and emergency service needs.

Monitor the condition and maintenance needs of company vehicles, trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and other company assets.

Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other equipment issues and assist mechanics with troubleshooting and repairs.

Ensure repairs and maintenance are completed properly, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards.

Establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules to reduce unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.

Coordinate outside vendors, parts suppliers, and specialty repair services when work cannot be completed in-house.

Manage parts, supplies, tools, and shop inventory and ensure necessary materials are available for repairs.

Review repair needs and determine appropriate priorities based on safety, operational needs, cost, and equipment availability.

Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, parts, and equipment history.

Monitor shop expenses and help control maintenance costs without compromising safety or quality.

Ensure company vehicles and equipment are maintained in compliance with applicable safety and regulatory requirements.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.

Enforce safe work practices and ensure employees properly use required personal protective equipment, tools, and equipment.

Train, coach, and develop shop employees while providing clear expectations and accountability.

Coordinate with operations, field management, and other departments regarding equipment availability, repairs, and maintenance needs.

Communicate equipment status, anticipated downtime, and repair timelines to appropriate managers.

Respond to urgent mechanical issues and assist with troubleshooting when equipment failures impact operations.

Identify opportunities to improve shop efficiency, maintenance processes, equipment reliability, and operating costs.

Ensure tools, shop equipment, and facilities are properly maintained.

Perform hands-on mechanical work and other shop duties as needed.

Requirements Qualifications

5+ years of experience in fleet, heavy-duty, automotive, diesel, or equipment maintenance preferred.

Previous supervisory or shop management experience preferred.

Strong mechanical and diagnostic skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex equipment issues.

Experience working with diesel engines, heavy trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, hydraulics, electrical systems, or similar equipment preferred.
