- 2 years’ experience in social work, shelter operations, or a related field; 1 year supervisory experience preferred. Comparable experience considered.
- Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds required.
- Customer service experience.
- Critical thinking, sound judgment, and decision making.
- Strong teamwork, oral and written communication skills.
- Highly motivated and a self‑starter.
- Supportive of The Salvation Army’s mission and able to reflect its high standards.
- Knowledge of trauma‑informed care and crisis intervention techniques.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and recordkeeping.
- Flexible to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet TSA driving requirements.
The Shelter Supervisor supports the Shelter Manager in operations and staffing for two overnight temporary shelters, ensuring safe, secure, and supportive environments for participants and staff. The role involves supervising and mentoring shelter staff, overseeing program procedures, and maintaining quality of care.
Key Responsibilities- Train, schedule, and develop support staff; coordinate with staffing agencies as needed.
- Mentor and provide role modeling for staff.
- Communicate staff timesheets and leave requests to the Shelter Manager.
- Ensure timely reporting of incidents and exclusions.
- Maintain shift coverage and supervise shift teams.
- Oversee nightly operations to keep shelter clean, safe, and secure.
- Ensure adequate supplies and resources for shelter operations.
- Apply policies, compliance, and contractual obligations.
- Support clients in transition from homelessness to shelter; manage intake and exit routines.
- Communicate with management and staff regarding activities.
- Intervene in client crises and conduct crisis intervention as needed.
- Maintain accurate daily records and submit reports.
- Maintain professional relationships with service providers, volunteers, and community members.
- Coordinate volunteer and intern efforts.
- Offer client referrals and coordinate with external services.
- Address facility maintenance and safety compliance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of standard procedures and operations.
- Strong computer skills; experience with internal digital systems and HMIS.
- Ability to function with limited direct oversight.
- Prioritization and time‑management of multiple requests.
- Problem‑solving and decision execution.
- Patience and ability to work in stressful environments.
- Confidentiality and privacy of program participants.
- Crisis intervention and mediation skills a plus.
Driver’s license, trauma‑informed care, assertive engagement, first aid and CPR, non‑violent crisis intervention, peer support, safe driving, civil rights training, blood borne pathogens training, de‑escalation training.
Physical Requirements- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to operate telephone and computer devices.
- Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
- Ability to understand written information.
- Ability to drive a motor vehicle with certification if required.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
