Job Summary
Multnomah County Library is seeking a Bilingual Vietnamese Library Assistant to connect Vietnamese‑speaking patrons with library services and to provide exceptional customer service in both Vietnamese and English. This role includes internal and external outreach, program support, and front‑desk responsibilities, with a focus on serving the diverse community served by the library.
Responsibilities- Deliver high‑quality patron, informational, and account management service to a diverse spectrum of customers in English and Vietnamese.
- Respond to information requests and circulation questions through multiple channels, locating information and referring questions as needed.
- Interpret information for patrons and staff between Vietnamese and English.
- Provide reader’s advisory services, including catalog use and resource recommendations.
- Conduct customer service conversations and reference interviews to determine patron needs.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and report issues with library equipment and software (computers, copiers, print management, fax/scan stations, checkout stations, card‐payment machines, and other devices).
- Support a safe and welcoming library environment by monitoring the space, collaborating with coworkers, and responding to incidents.
- Assist in selection, weeding, and replacement of materials in the collection.
- Collaborate with systemwide, regional, and location teams to plan, deliver, and evaluate services, programming, and outreach for cultural groups, especially Vietnamese‑speaking communities.
- Support location‑wide programming such as Summer Reading, cultural events, and Everybody Reads, including preparing and presenting story times.
- Represent the library at off‑site events such as community booths.
- Train, mentor, and orient staff and volunteers on library skills and resources.
- Provide general location support: scheduling, purchasing, supplies, inventory, meeting‑room booking, and facility requests.
- Open and close library location during service hours, operating equipment and ensuring safety.
- Serve as person‑in‑charge of the location when the manager is absent.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent experience (minimum two years of customer service experience).
- Fluency in Vietnamese and English, both written and spoken.
- Thorough knowledge of or extensive experience with the Vietnamese‑speaking community, including traditions, values, and customs.
- Ability to pass a criminal records check; results reviewed case‑by‑case.
- Positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work with diverse ages and backgrounds.
- At least one year of experience working in a library setting.
- Leadership experience in a library or related environment.
- Experience with programming, including teaching classes or conducting outreach.
