The Bike Bus Coordinator is the backbone of Bike Bus PDX’s emerging East Portland bike bus programs! This position will work closely with families, school staff, school districts and community-based organizations to plan, implement and evaluate bike buses.

  • Collaborate with school staff (social workers, counselors, principals), Bike Bus Champions (compensated school-based coordinators) and the PTA to build relationships with families and deliver a community-responsive bike bus program
  • Recruit and train Bike Bus Champions and volunteers at each school
  • Develop culturally-responsive student engagement programming
  • Design and ride each bike bus route regularly, working with Champions to address issues, relaying safety concerns to city and state stakeholders
  • Coordinate with the Bike Bus Liaison to develop and deliver school and family outreach materials such as flyers, newsletters and digital materials.
  • Collaborate with PE teachers and school admin to deliver bike education bicycle fleets
  • Maintain ride supplies and gear
  • Organize and execute biannual school-based bike swaps and fairs
  • Integrate best practices into an open-source ‘Bike Bus Toolkit’

  • Experienced Cyclist:
    You are confident assisting with group bicycle rides that include children and designing routes within urban settings.
  • Creative Problem Solver:
    You anticipate bumps in the road, and know what and who to collaborate with to get the job done in a fast-paced and time-sensitive environment.
  • Punctual Morning Person:
    You are an early bird who ensures that everyone arrives where they need to be by the ring of the first bell. You bring your all to early morning weekday programs, in addition to occasional weekend events.
  • Detail-Oriented:
    You are adept at tracking project details, expense reimbursements, and equipment logistics.

Bilingual in English/Spanish, lived experience in the communities we serve; experience with Safe Routes to School or active transportation, bike mechanic skills;
First Aid & CPR certifications. We expect strong candidates to be missing some of this.
