Position Summary
Under the direction of the Utilities Operations Manager/Chief Plant Operator, the Assistant Wastewater Plant Operator is responsible for all aspects of operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance for a 2.5 MGD conventional wastewater treatment plant and 17 lift stations. This includes planning and completing work activities with the assistance of other employees, making data‑based operational decisions, and ensuring that all assets are properly maintained using scheduled activities, industry and equipment standards, and life‑cycle analyses.
Safety is a critical function of this position. The Assistant Wastewater Plant Operator is expected to promote a culture of safety and efficiency, ensuring that employees have proper training and equipment.
Responsibilities- Track performance measures and create reports.
- Communicate effectively with the Utilities Operations Manager/Chief Plant Operator, Assistant Director of Public Works, and Director of Public Works.
- Manage finances to remain within budget.
- Assist with capital planning.
- Assist with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) testing and reporting to maintain regulatory compliance.
- Act as owner of the system by delivering results, driving innovation, and creating value for our system and customers.
- Fill in when the Utilities Operation/Chief Plant Operator is out.
- Attend mandatory in the event of a storm, disaster, or other circumstantial event.
- Perform other related work as required.
Applicant must pass a physical examination, drug screening test, and background check. High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Over 3 years of related experience is required. Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver License with a clean driving record. Class B or higher Wastewater License is highly preferred, but a combination of experience and lower license will be considered if a B license is obtained within 6 months of the hire date.
A Class C Water License is also required or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
This position is subject to the City of Portland’s Background Investigation and Drug Testing Policy. The City verifies all information prior to extending an offer of employment. New hires are required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States per Federal law.
