Job Summary
This position will provide safety leadership across a network of marine terminals, transport fleets, power plants, and other operating assets across Hartree’s portfolio. As a Corporate Safety Specialist, you are responsible for supporting the respective HSE business unit managers, engineering project managers, terminal managers, fleet managers, and front-line employees in implementing risk management programs and maintaining compliance with state and federal health and safety regulations.
In this position, you will report to the Director of Safety and work closely with the corporate safety, environment, and sustainability teams to achieve HSE-related goals, objectives, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develop, review, and improve written health and safety programs by taking ownership of all safety-related administrative controls
- Prepare in-person and computer-based training content on health and safety topics, deliver training, and identify additional training needs
- Maintain a field presence when needed at operating locations, particularly when major construction projects are taking place, such as dock repairs, storage tank inspections, and turnarounds
- Champion safety incentive programs to recognize desired behavior and promote a culture of safety
- Support employees in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment and assets
- Consistently seek opportunities to improve safety management practices
- Participate in investigations of unwanted events, interview involved parties, determine the root cause, and document lessons learned to prevent incident recurrence
- Bachelor’s Degree required in safety and occupational health, engineering, or a comparable field
- 10-15 years of experience in high-consequence industrial settings such as oil and gas, maritime, shipyards, or equivalent military experience. Experience in petroleum refining, pipelines, marine terminals, ethanol plants, power generation, or transportation is highly desired
- Professional/technical writing experience in the development of safety management systems or similar, including policy, procedure, and forms. A writing sample may be requested during the application process
- Familiarity with certificated safety management systems (ISO 45001, ISO
9001 ISM, API RP 1173, etc.), including internal and external audits, is desired but not required - Familiarity with learning management systems, such as Brainier, Vector, or Protect, is desired but not required
- Field experience in safe work permitting, including hot work, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and job hazard analyses to identify, analyze, & reduce exposures
- Incident investigation experience following a recognized root cause analysis methodology.
- Possess or be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Proficient with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs
- Ability to work independently to prioritize and manage workload while providing timely turnaround on tasks under changing deadlines, in a diverse and fast-paced environment
- Ability to drive long distances (6 hours or more) and fly domestically; ability to climb tank stairs and ladders, navigate uneven outdoor surfaces, enter confined spaces, board commercial cargo vessels, and ride in commercial motor vehicles
- Willingness and ability to travel with a company-provided vehicle, including occasional overnight stays, and to work unusual hours, including occasional nights and weekends
- The balance of time (50-60%) will be spent working from the Portsmouth, NH office or remotely from home, as appropriate
