Controller, Finance & Banking, Financial Reporting

TMS Architects & Interiors is seeking an in office full time Controller to lead financial management, reporting, and internal controls for our growing, project-based design firm.

This role is responsible for the integrity of financial reporting, cash flow forecasting, revenue recognition, and financial performance visibility across architectural and interiors operations. The Controller will support ownership with informed decision‑making while maintaining disciplined accounting processes.

This is not a transactional bookkeeping role. We are seeking a finance leader who understands project-based accounting and can translate financial data into operational insight.

• Budget Management / Profit and Loss
• Serve as primary liaison to external CPA to support tax planning and compliance
• Expert in Excel and Quick Books
• Financial Analysis for Past Performance and Future Growth
• Lead monthly financial close process
• Prepare and present monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
• Oversee revenue recognition and WIP review for project-based billing
• Partner with principals on financial performance analysis
• Deliver monthly budget vs actual and variance reporting
• Develop and maintain 3–6 month cash flow forecasts
• Monitor firm-wide labor multiplier and profitability metrics
• Provide project margin visibility to leadership

• Oversee AR aging and collections strategy
• Ensure timely billing coordination with project managers
• Monitor unbilled WIP and prevent margin leakage
• Manage liquidity planning and banking relationships

• Oversee AP and payroll processing (may supervise accounting support)
• Perform or oversee bank and credit card reconciliations
• Maintain internal controls and separation of duties
• File monthly sales tax returns (including FF&E where applicable)
• Coordination with Interiors department on Purchasing support

• Maintain financial integrity between Quick Books and BQE
• Improve reporting workflows and operational dashboards
• Identify and implement process improvements

• Serve as primary liaison to external CPA
• Support tax planning and compliance
• Coordinate annual insurance renewals and financial documentation

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required
• 7+ years progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility
• Experience in professional services, architecture, engineering, construction or project‑based firms strongly preferred
• Deep understanding of:
• Revenue recognition
• Work in Progress (WIP) accounting
• Project margin analysis
• Cash flow forecasting
• Advanced proficiency in Quick Books and Excel (pivot tables, modeling, analysis)
• Experience with BQE or similar project accounting systems preferred
• Strong communication skills and ability to partner with operational leadership
• High integrity and comfort working in an owner‑led environment
• Experience in managing multiple companies
