A great internship opportunity for a student seeking internship credit that is currently pursuing a degree in Natural Sciences Forestry Environment Science or related major. The internship will run from May 20th 2024 - August 26th 2024. Willing to accommodate incumbents school scheduled if needed. Pay rate is $19.00 an hour and hours are Monday

The Urban Forestry Intern will assist the Highway Departments Urban Forestry staff performing a variety of field work throughout the City of Portsmouth. Candidates for this position will be required to work outdoors with the field crew.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. * Water newly planted trees.

* Work with the field crew to perform urban canopy maintenance; such as pruning or removing trees; and perform associated tasks including site cleanup and safety procedures.

* Brew and apply compost tea.

* Perform basic City infrastructure pruning over sidewalks; roads; and street signs.

* Capture work and update information in the tree inventory system.

* Operate forestry machinery such as brush chipper; stump grinder; or grapple truck.

Work Environment

Work is performed outside in all weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license and good driving record. Previous experience in Forestry;
Landscaping;
Natural Resources; or related field is preferred. Previous experience is not required. Training will be provided.
