Position Overview:
A Tradesperson Class 1 (splicer) completes detailed tasks associated with the manufacturing and handling of cable and equipment for integration assembly based on training and written procedures. The focus of this position will be on fiber optic splicing. This includes, but is not limited to, joining terminated cable ends to repeaters and other cable ends, sorting fibers by color and fiber type, direct splicing of fibers and splicing to components as well as coiling fibers into an assembly.
This position may require individuals to lead within the area and work in areas outside of assembly rooms, such as onboard freighters and in the Creel Building.
Responsibilities and Duties:
* * Adheres to the safety and quality standards (goals and metrics) of the organization while working within a team environment.
* * Achieving and maintaining a splice yield above 90% while performing at least 64 splices per shift is required.
* * Be able to troubleshoot all components on the Mobile Splice Station as defined in the Work Instructions.
* * Function as a peer inspector for other splice operators.
* * Be able to be trained and certified for more complex cable units such as MJ-T, MJ-S and GEJ assemblies within 1-year of starting production splicing.
* * Be able to clean, inspect and disposition fibers and splinted splices.
* * Be able to manage more than 175-meters of fiber and 96 splints in a single assembly. This includes coiling the fiber and storing the splints in a single MJ assembly, without inducing any damage or non-conforming bends in the fiber.
* * Be able to correctly determine fiber color and identification using a Spectrophotometer. Be able to determine when the Spectrophotometer is incorrect and assist in the over-ride process.
* * Follows safety guidelines (PPE, etc.) and demonstrates safe work practices.
* * Leads and communicates with team members in a positive manner.
* * Performs first level visual inspection, identifying errors and reports issues to appropriate personnel.
* * Follows verbal and written instruction and is accountable for his/her actions.
* * Accepts increased responsibility and is accountable for his/her actions.
* * Physically handles cable and inserts it into large holding pans.
* * Be able to become certified in the use of Calipers, Micrometers and Torque wrenches.
* * Have basic computer skills. Be able to use Microsoft programs including Windows, Word and Excel. Understand basic computer connectivity and troubleshooting.
* * Have sufficient dexterity to handle and manipulate fibers without incurring ang damage.
* Promotes job and process improvement as it relates to the department (through 5S as well as other improvement initiatives).
