Half paid at the beginning of the November 2025 winter plowing season and the remainder paid at the end of the season March 2026.

SummaryPerforms skilled year-round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry-level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.
Your Experience CountsEach additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience, and vice versa.
Minimum QualificationsEducation/Experience: Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school.
License/Certification: Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL-A) with appropriate tank endorsement.
Other Requirements:
- Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation.
- Offers of employment are conditional upon obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.
- Negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with CFR and US DOT requirements.
- Ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis.
- Possession of a telephone or acceptable means of communication and being available 24 hours per day.
Trainee Option: Candidates that possess a valid CDL-B with ability to obtain CDL-A within 1 year and otherwise satisfy the minimum requirements may be hired in trainee status for this position.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in the operation of motorized highway equipment.

Responsibilities- Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance/construction equipment, machinery, and vehicle components used in highway construction and maintenance, including snow/ice removal, flood mitigation, and road surface seasonal treatment.
- Maintain assigned equipment, perform field adjustments and emergency repairs; escalate issues to supervisor as needed.
- Assess winter road conditions and determine appropriate plowing/spreading actions; train and supervise entry-level personnel assisting in road condition efforts.
- Supervise, train, and review the work of small crews, entry-level workers, and contractors to ensure safety, environmental practices, and proper methods.
- Perform routine maintenance and road work under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic and hazards, ensuring public safety.
- Traverse varying terrain; perform tasks requiring heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Respond immediately to winter maintenance and other traffic emergencies on a 24-hour basis, year-round.
