Sanitation Laborer

The City of Portsmouth is seeking a dependable and hardworking Sanitation Laborer. This essential role is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and healthy community spaces by collecting refuse, garbage, and other debris from curbsides and roadsides in all weather conditions.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday. Typical schedule is 7:30am-3:30pm but can vary by day.

Starting pay range is $23.42 -$25.83 an hour based on experience and per the 1386A Working Agreement.

NATURE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to pick up andotherwise clear refuse, garbage, vegetation and other debris in all weather conditions from curbs and roadsides and leave collection areas generallyclean. Other seasonal clearing and cleaning operations are also performed. The workinvolves constant safety awareness, the ability to recognize and take appropriate actions regarding hazardous materials and to use hand tools.

SUPERVISION
Workis performed under the general direction of the Public Works Director, Highway General Foreman, or their designee. Incumbent plans and carries out dailywork independently and occasionally assist other mechanics.

Performance is subject to review according to the City's personnel plan through observation, reports, tests, and the results achieved.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Lifting, emptying refuse and/or recycling containers,debris, plastic bags, appliances and other items weighting up to 80 pounds intotrucks and returning waste and recycling containers in an acceptable manner.

2. Obtaining the help of other individuals or equipment as appropriate to lift items over 80 pounds and otherwise working in a safe mannerwearing the proper protective equipment and clothing.

3. Assisting with vehicle operations such as backing,turning, and limited and temporary traffic control, operating packing orlifting equipment.

4. Assists with customer education of proper refusedisposal methods.

5. Assists with maintaining and performing job site andwork safety practices.

6. Is subject to call out to respond to emergencies afternormal working hours.

EXAMPLES OF OTHERJOB FUNCTIONS

1. Checks vehicles, attachments and tools for general operating condition. Assists with keeping vehicles and equipment clean and in a serviceable condition. Reports repair needs to supervisors and mechanics.

WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
Primary duties of this position involve:
Remaining stationary in and ona moving vehicle for extended periods, operating truck equipment, andtransporting and moving items. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions, near disposal areas, in public works yard, and outdoor field locations. Current position includes some limited physical requirements including: transporting refuse, barrels, and items weighing up to 80 pounds.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must havegraduated from high school or earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED), aworking knowledge of how to care for, operate and use refuse collectionequipment and associated hand tools and have not less than six monthssuccessful work experience.

Candidate must obtain a CDL class B license within a year ofhire.
