As a Hospice Medical Director, here is a big picture view of what you will do:
  • Act as the physician representative of the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG)
  • Act as the primary medical resource to the IDG
  • Provide the overall medical direction of the hospice
  • Provide the patient's medical care as it pertains to the terminal diagnosis
Essential Functions of the Hospice Medical Director:
  • Patient certification and recertification
  • Oversight of physician services by supporting the attending physician's care and ensuring continuity of hospice medical services.
  • Documentation of patient progression in end stage disease
  • Maintain medical staff privileges in good standing at facilities providing short term inpatient care to hospice patients
  • Supervision of medical personnel including all hospice physician employees and any physicians under contract to ensure quality medical care and compliance with hospice standards
  • Participates in the initial patient plan of care prior to delivery of hospice services and ongoing review of plan of care
  • Actively participates in IDG meetings
  • Participates in the development, implementation and review of clinical protocols and procedures
  • Participates in the quality assessment and performance improvement program (QAPI)
  • Assists in resolving patient, family, or hospice program clinical and ethical disputes or concerns
  • Act as the patient's physician to address general medical needs, pain and symptom management, and other medical interventions should the patient's attending physician be unavailable or choose to relinquish care
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements for a Hospice Medical Director:
  • A doctor of medicine or osteopathy
  • Current license in good standing in the state of Ohio
  • Board certified (related specialty preferred but not required)
  • Hospice/palliative experience, preferred
