(SUMMARY) JOB DESCRIPTION

The 21st Century Skills teacher will be responsible for instruction of students in grades 5 - 8 as part of the Unified Arts team. Dynamic classroom instruction should include a focus on project-based learning and developing skills in inquiry, collaboration, authentic problem-solving, and utilizing written and verbal communication. Creative lesson design will foster student initiative and agency.

EDUCATION TRAINING

EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.

CERTIFICATE / LICENSE

REQUIRED:

Any valid Rhode Island teaching certificate/s covering Grades 5-8

In accordance with Rhode Island’s Right to Read Act, all educators must demonstrate awareness of and/or proficiency in the Science of Reading. All qualified candidates will have completed an approved Right to Read training program or possess current certification of proficiency or awareness (out-of-staterachers may be granted one year from their date of hire to complete the required training). Awareness Certification requires 10-hours of training, which can be completed online, and free-of-charge on BRIDGE-RI.

For positions requiring Proficiency, more intensive coursework is required. Educators can achieve this by completing state-approved certificate/degree programs (e.g., reading specialist certification or a related Master's degree). Upon successful completion of approved proficiency training, educators can apply for a free Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement to add to their teaching certificate.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:

  • Plans and conducts project-based learning lessons that incorporate appropriate modeling, and scaffolding which provide students with opportunities to learn, observe, question and investigate in alignment with appropriate national standards.
  • Creates a rigorous classroom environment where students work collaboratively with their peers to solve authentic problems and complete projects that will be open-ended and encourage multiple methods of investigation and solution.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Monitors and assesses student progress using formative assessment data and adjusts instruction accordingly.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Grades students using checkpoints, self- assessment and rubrics which are focused on the process and contain explicit and clear criteria, according to school department policies.
  • Develops and maintains positive and cooperative interactions and communications with parents, colleagues and community.
  • Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Participates in and implements district and school-based professional development activities.
  • Adheres to the Rhode Island Educator Code of Professional Responsibility.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues at the school and district level to improve teaching, learning and educational programming for students.
  • Performs other duties as designated by the building principal.
  • SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, test data, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public.
