Job DescriptionTidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.
The college had 3,399 graduates in , 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled ’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The Assistant Athletic Director/Academic Advisor is a dual-role position that combines academic advising for student-athletes with high-level operational leadership for the Athletics program. This position ensures student-athletes receive comprehensive academic support to maintain eligibility and achieve success, while also managing strategic scheduling, travel coordination, and event operations for all athletic programs. Acting as a key partner to the Director of Athletics, this role plays a critical part in advancing both the academic and athletic mission of the college.
FunctionalResponsibilities
Academic Advising
- Provide individualized academic advising to student-athletes, including course selection, registration, and degree planning.
- Monitor academic progress, conduct grade checks, and implement success strategies to ensure NJCAA eligibility.
- Coordinate bi‑weekly advising sessions and maintain accurate records of student‑athlete performance.
- Serve as liaison to Admissions, Financial Aid, Educational Accessibility, Academic Affairs, and Tutoring services.
- Submit required eligibility and academic reports to the Director of Athletics.
Logistics and Operations
- Strategic Scheduling:
Develop and manage master schedules for games, practices, and special events, ensuring compliance with NJCAA regulations and institutional priorities. - Travel Program Oversight:
Design and implement comprehensive travel plans for teams, including transportation, lodging, and meals; negotiate contracts with vendors for cost‑effective arrangements. - Facilities Management:
Coordinate with campus leadership and external partners to secure venues; oversee facility readiness, equipment setup, and safety compliance. - Event Operations Leadership:
Serve as lead for game‑day operations, supervising staff and volunteers, managing security coordination, and ensuring smooth execution of athletic events. - Budget & Resource Planning:
Collaborate with the Director of Athletics to forecast operational budgets, monitor expenditures, and identify cost‑saving opportunities. - Vendor & Contract Management:
Establish and maintain vendor relationships; oversee contract negotiations and ensure timely delivery of goods and services. - Risk Management & Compliance:
Implement risk management protocols for travel and events; ensure adherence to NJCAA, institutional, and safety regulations. - Technology & Systems Oversight:
Utilize scheduling and logistics software to streamline operations; maintain accurate records for reporting and compliance.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Act as a secondary point of contact for Athletics operations in the absence of the Director.
- Collaborate with campus departments (Finance, Marketing, Public Safety) and external partners for event execution.
- Contribute to strategic planning for Athletics growth and student engagement.
This is a restricted funded position.
Minimum Qualifications- Previous experience in academic advising and/or related student support services.
- Previous experience in athletics administration.
- Knowledge of NJCAA compliance and eligibility requirements.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems.
- Experience coordinating athletic events and travel logistics.
- Familiarity with People Soft or similar student systems.
- Background in budget management and procurement processes.
- Experience working with community college students and diverse populations.
