Library Media Specialist

POSITION TITLE:

LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST

REPORTS TO:

BUILDING PRINCIPAL OVER-TIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 710

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs difficult professional work instructing students in library skills, operating a school library and serving as a resource for instructional personnel and students; does related work as required.

Planning, overseeing, supervising and operating the library; providing instruction in library skills; serving as library and media resource person.

• Evaluates, selects and orders new library materials;
• Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials;
• Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system of cataloging library materials;
• Instructs students and faculty in the use of library, media and audiovisual materials and equipment;
• Teaches essential library and reference skills;
• Counsels with and provides guidance to students with special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests;
• Publicizes the services of the library;
• Promotes appropriate conduct of students utilizing the library by establishing and enforcing rules;
• Performs general library duties relating to cataloging, reference, shelving, inventory and circulation;
• Prepares and administers the library budget;
• Performs related tasks as required.

Thorough knowledge of professional library principals, materials and practices, thorough knowledge of prescribed school system policies and procedures; ability to evaluate library programs and services and to develop improved methods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, lifting, and fingering;

vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Eligible for or in possession of a Virginia Teaching license with endorsement in Library Media K-12.
