Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads for 50 years, growing into a regional educational and economic force. The College is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024‑25. The College is accredited through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
This position has been designated an essential position. The employee may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities in the event of a college or campus closure due to weather or other emergent conditions.
Responsibilities- Maintain the security and confidentiality of proprietary or sensitive information or data in any medium regarding the college or its students, faculty, or staff.
- Assist in ensuring desktop standardization and performance.
- Utilize diagnostic and data recovery software to install, set up, and configure common application software packages and operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Windows 10/11 and Apple).
- Assist in performing setup and maintenance of network interface systems (e.g., Ethernet, Fast Ethernet).
- Test wiring, IP telephone equipment and peripherals for switched and non‑switched services (voice, data, and video).
- Interpret written requests, coordinate work with customers, install or repair requested services, document tasks, and interact with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists.
- Provide first‑level customer support and complete appropriate paperwork.
Special Assignments: May be required to perform other duties as assigned, including assistance to the agency or state government during an emergency declared by the Governor.
Qualifications- Knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop applications, including Apple OS, Windows 10/11, and Microsoft Office 2013/2016.
- Basic understanding of local area networks, including TCP/IP in a large WAN/LAN environment.
- Basic knowledge of anti‑virus and network security scanning software.
- Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computers, operating systems, and peripherals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with end users and technical staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and participate as a member of cross‑departmental project teams.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet inflexible deadlines, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain composure with difficult situations.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team without direct supervision.
- Basic knowledge of Voice Over IP concepts for Ethernet networks.
