A leading U.S. shipyard is seeking an experienced Superintendent I to oversee commercial and government new heavy steel fabrication projects, including shipboard repair work. This role is a senior project-focused position with full ownership of contractual deliverables, cost control, schedule management, and compliance — without daily direct supervision of trade labor.
This is a high-visibility leadership role within shipyard operations, ideal for a superintendent with deep fabrication knowledge and strong contract execution experience.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Execution
- Lead and manage new heavy steel fabrication projects from planning through completion
- Develop project schedules, resource plans, and execution strategies
- Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
- Coordinate with internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors to meet scope, schedule, and quality requirements
- Approve time charges, material expenditures, and rental equipment within assigned authority
Cost Control & Contract Administration
- Write and modify subcontract purchase orders
- Ensure subcontract values remain current and job costs are accurately tracked
- Compare labor expenditures against spending plans and report variances with explanation
- Support contract teams with schedule impact analysis and change order justification
Commercial & Government Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all contractual, regulatory, and classification society requirements
- Maintain accurate documentation to support audits and government reviews
- Adhere to all applicable industry regulations throughout project execution
Heavy Steel Fabrication & Shipboard Repair
- Manage heavy steel fabrication and shipboard repair planning, logistics, and execution
- Coordinate with vessel owners, operators, and onboard personnel to minimize downtime
- Oversee deployment of repair teams, equipment, and materials to vessel sites
Quality & Safety Oversight
- Enforce quality assurance standards and safety protocols
- Conduct inspections and audits to verify compliance
- Address non-conformities and safety issues promptly with corrective action
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of shipyard experience focused on commercial and/or government heavy steel fabrication
- Proven success managing complex new fabrication and shipboard repair projects
- Strong technical knowledge of heavy steel fabrication processes and safety standards
- Experience working in dry docks and vessel inspections
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
- Ability to work onsite with flexibility for extended hours as required
Security Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Must be DBIDS eligible and able to obtain and maintain Defense Biometric Identification System access
- Must be able to access government facilities
