Structural Welder J4 - 2nd Shift
Job Location:
Norfolk, Virginia
Department:
Steel Shop
Shift: 2nd Shift - 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM (30-minute lunch)
Rate of Pay: $26.00 per hour (per diem available for those that qualify)

DESCRIPTION
Hutco, Inc. is hiring experienced Journeyperson 4 Structural Welders to support operations in the Steel Shop in Norfolk, VA. This position requires advanced welding expertise across multiple base metals and processes, ensuring all welds meet structural and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform structural welding on base metals including HY-80 and HY-100
- Weld materials such as:
- Steel
- Aluminum
- Copper Nickel
- Stainless Steel
- Utilize welding processes including:
- SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
- GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding)
- FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding)
- Select and apply proper wire and shielding gas combinations
- Produce welds that meet inspection and NDT acceptance criteria
- Read and interpret weld gauges accurately
- Use hand tools and welding equipment safely and efficiently
- Follow Standard Item 1689 requirements
- Adhere to 5S workplace organization guidelines
- Work effectively with limited supervision
Journeyperson 4 (Welder) Qualifications
- Proven experience welding HY-80 and HY-100 materials
- Proficiency in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW welding processes
- Ability to produce welds acceptable for NDT inspection
- Familiarity with weld gauges and quality control standards
- Knowledge of Standard Item 1689
- Understanding of 5S guidelines
- Ability to follow supervision while working independently

- Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights
- Must tolerate exposure to shipyard conditions, including noise, dust, heat, and varying weather
- Must wear required PPE at all times
- Reports to the Steel Shop Supervisor or Welding Foreman
- Collaborates with ship fitters, inspectors, and other skilled trades
- Works with Quality Assurance and Safety teams to ensure compliance
- Responsible for producing high-quality structural welds
- Ensures compliance with NAVSEA standards and safety regulations
- Maintains productivity and quality workmanship
- Supports overall Steel Shop production goals
