Summary

You will serve as a TOOLMAKER in the PRODUCTION RESOURCE DEPARTMENT, MECHANICAL SHOP (930) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

Help

  • You will use machines and tools of the Toolmaker/Machinist trade to manufacture pieces and parts used in manufacturing portable machines, molds, dies, special tools.
  • You will manufacture from metal stock all types of jigs, fixtures and machine parts along with cutting tools, hobs, double angle cutters, form tools, end mills and broaches, including metal dies and bending dies.
  • You will design and manufacture rubber and plastic molds from aluminum and steel; manufacture rubber and plastic products from these molds.

  • A mandate in the Production Resource Department memorandum  dated March 17, 2014: this position requires the incumbent to provide personal basic hand tools applicable to their trade.
  • Uses Respiratory Equipment, Enters Access in 18” diameter, Works in confined spaces.
  • Rad Qual Required (NUC PSNS)

ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION:

  • Machine Operation:
    Master both conventional and CNC tools, attachments, and manual control inputs.
  • Material & Tooling Expertise:
    Understand metal and non-metal properties to select optimal speeds, feeds, and cutting tools.
  • Planning & Layout:
    Interpret blueprints, calculate shop mathematics, and sequence operations even with missing data.
  • Component Repair:
    Troubleshoot, disassemble, inspect, report, and reassemble complex parts and faulty machinery.
  • Precision Finishing:
    Manufacture complete items using handwork and precision instruments like micrometers and calipers.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    Adhere to shipyard safety, ESH, PPE rules, and nuclear/non-nuclear material controls.
