We are looking for a Licensed Practical Nurse for a full-time position supporting the Naval Medical Center at Portsmouth, VA.
SummaryWe are seeking a dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse to deliver high-quality patient care in a fast-paced clinical environment. The ideal candidate will perform a broad range of nursing duties – from patient intake and triage through diagnostic support, treatment procedures, and discharge planning – while working closely with physicians, registered nurses, and patients’ families to ensure safe, compassionate care.
Main DutiesPatient intake & triage. Check patients in, perform triage per clinic guidelines, obtain patient and family histories, and inform the nurse or physician of the patient’s condition and any potential concerns.
Diagnostic support. Take vital signs, collect and label specimens, perform lab tests, assist physicians during procedures (e.g., lumbar punctures, colposcopies, sigmoidoscopies), and track and report diagnostic results.
Treatment & procedures. Perform sterile dressing changes, insert catheters and nasogastric tubes, administer medications and immunizations, manage IV fluids, give enemas, and operate auxiliary equipment such as oxygen and suction apparatus.
Documentation & medication management. Maintain accurate nursing care records, document medication administration (dose, time, reason if withheld), observe and report changes in patient condition, and execute physician orders within standard nursing practice guidelines.
Patient & family education. Instruct patients and families on procedures, equipment use, prescribed medications, contraindications, and follow-up care. Provide emotional support and assist with health education in coordination with the nursing and physician team.
Admission, transfer & discharge. Assist with patient admission, transfer, and discharge planning. Transport patients to ancillary departments (Radiology, Physical Therapy, etc.) and prepare patients for tests, treatments, and minor surgery.
Emergency response & safety. Recognize emergencies and assist with or initiate emergency measures (e.g., cardiac arrest response). Maintain and inspect emergency equipment (oxygen, emergency cart, suction apparatus) and log any discrepancies with the Charge Nurse.
Environment & operations. Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe clinical environment. Handle telephone inquiries with accuracy and respect for patient confidentiality. Ensure necessary supplies are stocked and equipment is operational.
Requirements- Possess a Licensed Practical Nurse degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, university, or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time of completion:
The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE, or equivalent Military Training Program. - One year of practical or vocational nurse experience after graduation
