ResponsibilitiesThe Virginia Department of Health, Portsmouth District is seeking a Public Health Nurse. The Public Health Nurse will provide professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes, schools and other community or congregate care settings. Responsibilities include performing nursing assessments, conducting lab tests, taking measurements, developing and implementing care plans that incorporate medication administration and case management. The Nurse participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments and may supervise support staff.
The Nurse is required to hold RN licensure and may provide documentation of immunizations as required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to analyze problems and suggest solutions, possess leadership and the ability to follow directions and prioritize.
- Skills in physical examination, health assessment, interviewing, and counseling techniques.
- Ability to function independently, prioritize work, solve problems, adapt to change, work as a team member, and interact with the public.
- Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, epidemiology, immunizations, basic nursing science, medical terminology, and case management.
- May be required to travel, work some weekends and/or evenings.
- Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.
- Additional study in health promotion or public health is preferred.
- BSN preferred.
- Experience in a public health setting or related to disease prevention and health promotion.
