Title:

Intern – Undergraduate Archival Posting Intern

Location:

History Center - 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102

Compensation:
Typical starting salary $16.50 hourly

Hours:

Part‑time, temporary (approx. September 14, 2026 to December 20, 2026). 15 hrs/week. Flexible schedule. Preferred 5‑hour shifts 9–5.

Seminar and Presentation Schedule

Interns must attend three in‑person seminars:
September 24, 11:30‑1:00 pm;
October 15;
November 12, 2:00‑4:00 pm. Final presentations:
December 17, 11:00‑1:00 pm.

Description

This intern will assist with ingestion of paper‑based, PDF, and Word legacy finding aids into the ASpace database and may help the ASpace Migration Team with QC checking finding aids as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Introduction to Data Entry & Description (50%):
    • Archives Space Data Input: learn to use the interface to type and organize collection inventories.
    • Finding Aid Creation: assist in drafting basic descriptions and historical summaries for selected archival folders or small collections.
    • Data Cleanup: update older typed inventories or spreadsheet data and migrate them into the modern Archives Space system.
  • Collection Handling & Preservation (40%):
    • Assist with physical processing of collections: sorting chronologically or topically.
    • Re‑house fragile materials into acid‑free folders and specialized archival boxes.
    • Identify and remove damaging fasteners such as rusted paperclips, staples, and degrading rubber bands.
  • Mentorship & Professional Development (10%):
    • Shadow archive staff to learn about digitization, reference services, and public exhibits.
    • Complete a short final reflection or presentation about the collection worked on.
  • Qualifications
    • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduated within past 12 months.
    • Enthusiastic about history and cultural preservation.
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in typing and data entry.
    • Comfortable working on a computer and learning new software interfaces.
    • Ability to follow written instructions and ask questions for clarification.
    • Major in History, English, Art History, Anthropology, Computer Science, Digital Humanities encouraged, though all majors welcome.
    • Prior archival or library experience not required; training will be provided.
