Shift Information
Shift: 3rd Shift, Sunday - Thursday, 10:30 pm - 7:00 am
Compensation: $24.62 per hour plus $2.00 shift differential
Job SummaryThis individual contributor role prepares products and materials for the galvanizing process by hanging angle on spreader bars, staging tubular products, and preparing small parts for galvanizing. The Material Handler also inspects production fixtures, chains, and hooks, ensuring proper repair or discarding of unsafe items. Additional duties include handling wire small to medium parts to racks for pickling or galvanizing, pulling and placing chains and ropes around steel bundles for racking, moving pieces of steel by hand from various locations in the plant and yard, performing paddling functions to enhance quality with air guns, using air or electric powered tools to prepare steel, assisting in general plant clean‑up and housekeeping, and working safely with required PPE, including completing a respirator fit test per OSHA standards.
EssentialFunctions
- Screen materials to be galvanized and report unsafe or inappropriate materials
- Operate the overhead bridge crane safely, securely, and productively
- Perform paddling functions to enhance the quality level of galvanized products
- Wear required personal protective equipment and follow facility safety regulations
- Maintain a safe and productive working environment
- Inspect and report any materials that are rusty, damaged, bent, missing welds, or improperly vented
The Material Handler reports to the Shift Supervisor, who reports to the Production Manager or Operations Manager. The Operations Manager reports directly to the General Manager of the Valley Coatings site. The Material Handler has no direct subordinates but supports the General Shop Help.
Required Qualifications- Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to add and subtract
- Working knowledge of production hand tools and gauges
- High awareness for safety at all times
- Ability to accurately read a tape measure
- Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 pounds
- Person of passion and integrity with a drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- One year of previous experience in a manufacturing environment
- One year of previous experience in a galvanizing or coatings environment
- Ability to communicate and interact with coworkers positively
- Attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions
- Knowledge of hazardous substances and basic employee responsibilities for chemical safety
- Problem solving and troubleshooting skills
